EESL signs MoU with Gurugram Municipal Corporation to install LED street lights

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the Ministry of Power, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Municipal Corporation, Gurugram to install LED street lights under the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP).

Gurugram becomes the first city in Haryana to implement the project. The implementation is in line with the Smart Cities initiative of the Government of Haryana.

The MoU was signed here by Shri. N.D. Vashishtha, Superintending Engineer, MCG and Shri. Venkatesh Dwivedi, CGM (T), EESL in the august presence of Shri V Umashankar, Commissioner, MCG and Shri Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director, EESL. EESL shall replace over 48,568 conventional street lights with LED lights, which would lead MCG to save approximately 13 million units of electricity annually.

The MoU entails entire upfront capital cost of upgradation of conventional streetlight fixtures with LED streetlight fixtures will be invested by MCG while EESL will carry out the annual maintenance and warranty replacement on behalf of MCG for a period of 10 years.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director, EESL said, "EESL is proud to partner with the Municipal Corporation, Gurugram in helping them replace the city's conventional street lighting with LED-based street lighting. The Millennium City of Gurugram takes a step ahead to become a smart city. The fact that SLNP is now being implemented by two municipalities in India's largest urban agglomeration – Delhi NCR, reinforces our belief that India is taking rapid strides to be a world leader in energy efficiency."

At present, the street light system prevailing in MCG consists of conventional lighting systems such as High Pressure Sodium Vapour lamps, Metal Halide lamps and Fluorescent Tube Lights. The installation of LED based street lighting system is essential, since LED lighting offer higher efficiency, better illumination and life expectancy apart from being environmentally sustainable. 

EESL will be implementing the Centralised Control & Monitoring System (CCMS) as a replacement of existing conventional streetlight fixtures besides providing minimum guarantee of savings of 45-55 percent to MCG. 

In India, street lighting sector offers a significant potential of energy efficiency and cost savings. As per the 18th Electric Power Survey of CEA, the estimated energy consumption in Indian public lighting sector is 8,478 M KWh in 2012-13 and is constantly growing at a CAGR of seven percent. Keeping in mind this growth rate, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched 100 cities National Programme on January 5, 2015 to convert conventional street and domestic lights with energy efficient LED lights.

Under Street Light National Programme (SLNP), EESL has been tasked to carry out replacement of 1.34 crore conventional street lights across the country. In Delhi, EESL has replaced over 2,60,000 street lights in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) area, which has led SDMC to save 3.6 crore kWh electricity annually, while resulting in a reduction of over 29,000 tonnes of CO2.  Nationally, over 36 lakh conventional street lights have been replaced by LED street lights in 22 states of India.
