Que: Could you highlight some of the latest innovations in mechanical and dry gas sealing technology and explain how they are enhancing reliability and operational uptime in heavy industries?
Ans: Our latest mechanical and dry gas sealing innovations are designed to help heavy industries, including oil and gas, petrochemicals, power generation, and clean energy, maintain high reliability and maximise uptime. At the core of this is our Sense Turbo technology, which embeds sensors in dry gas seals to provide continuous performance data. This enables the early detection of potential issues, supporting maintenance and preventing costly downtime.
To maintain seal performance, we pair API 692–compliant support systems and advanced filtration along with Sense Turbo, ensuring only clean, conditioned gas reaches the seal faces, reducing wear and extending seal life. Our next-generation separation seals, such as the Type 93AX Coaxial Seal, further safeguard operations by reducing oil migration, lowering nitrogen use by up to 80 percent, and protecting the primary seal from contamination. Together, these innovations enable critical compressors and rotating equipment to operate for extended periods without maintenance, ensuring safer, more efficient, and consistently reliable performance in demanding environments.
Que: How are your solutions helping industrial operators reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and comply with tightening environmental regulations?
Ans: Industrial operations face growing pressure to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and comply with evolving environmental standards without compromising reliability. Meeting these demands requires solutions that optimise performance, conserve resources, and support regulatory compliance.
Our Seal Gas Recovery system captures dry and vent gas that would otherwise be released, allowing it to be reused. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves process efficiency. Additionally, our energy-optimisation solutions enhance equipment performance, lowering overall energy consumption. This combination of emissions reduction and operational efficiency improvement helps industries meet regulatory requirements, reduce their environmental footprint and maintain dependable performance. What differentiates John Crane is our proven track record in upstream pumping, where we integrate sustainability into performance. From seal gas recovery to wet-to-gas (W2G) upgrades that replace high-emission wet seals, and advanced methane that helps operators identify and prevent fugitive leaks, our solutions directly address both regulatory and environmental priorities. Combined with energy-optimisation solutions that reduce power demand, we help customers achieve compliance while advancing their own-net zero ambitions.
Que: What role do advanced analytics and IoT-based monitoring play in improving asset integrity and minimising unplanned downtime?
Ans: Our advanced analytics and IoT-based monitoring systems give operators continuous, near real-time visibility into equipment performance, enabling them to track operating conditions across multiple sites. Sensors detect subtle changes in acoustics, temperature, or detection of liquid, signalling potential issues before they escalate into failures.
This early insight allows teams to plan interventions with precision, prioritise maintenance activities, and optimise workflows with minimal disruption. When combined with algorithms, the data supports long-term asset management, helping schedule repairs, allocate resources efficiently, and extend the life of critical machinery. Over time, these insights improve safety, reliability, and process optimisation building resilience against unexpected disruptions.
Que: Hydrogen production, storage, and transport bring unique sealing challenges. How is John Crane preparing its sealing systems to be 'hydrogen-ready'?
Ans: Our sealing innovations are increasingly critical in enabling the hydrogen economy, which is essential to the global net-zero transition. We design solutions that support every stage of the hydrogen value chain — production, storage, transportation, and end use across both green and blue hydrogen applications.
Operating conditions in hydrogen service often involve high pressures, variable purity levels, and hydrogens exceptionally small molecular size. Our engineered mechanical seals and dry gas seal support systems are designed to minimise leakage, enhance safety, and extend equipment life. We also use hydrogen-compatible materials and specialised coatings that can withstand embrittlement, corrosion, and wear under extreme temperatures and pressures. Our filtration solutions are equally critical across the value chain from seal gas and lube oil filters for compressors and other critical rotating machinery to hydrogen-/ammonia-/methanol fuel filters in marine and other applications, and we are working on next generation electrolyser filters that are increasingly seen as one of the most critical enablers of reliable and safe operation. Combined with our monitoring and maintenance capabilities, these technologies help operators maintain uptime, reduce emissions, and manage costs more effectively. In doing so, we not only address current operational needs but also support the large-scale deployment of hydrogen infrastructure worldwide.
Que: How do you see the company contributing to India’s journey toward industrial decarbonisation and energy independence?
Ans: As India moves towards a cleaner and more self-reliant industrial future, we are supporting every stage of the transition. Our solutions address both immediate efficiency gains and long-term adoption of low-carbon technologies.
In the near term, we help reduce emissions and improve efficiency in existing operations through advanced sealing, filtration and reliability solutions. Our carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) expertise enable safe handling of high-pressure CO₂ supporting deeper decarbonisation. In parallel, we are preparing for hydrogen adoption with specialised sealing and filtration systems for production, storage, and transportation. By combining energy efficiency, carbon management, and hydrogen-ready solutions, we are helping India build a sustainable, energy-secure industrial future.
Que: Which technologies or solutions do you believe will have the most transformative impact on industrial reliability and sustainability over the next decade?
Ans: Over the next decade industrial reliability and sustainability will be shaped by technologies that combine intelligence, adaptability, and resilience. Automated monitoring and predictive analytics will enable plants to optimise entire systems rather than individual components, improving consistency under dynamic conditions.
Advanced materials and next generation sealing solutions will allow equipment to withstand harsher environments, while automated maintenance platforms will reduce downtime and the need for manual intervention. The integration of sensors, analytics, and control systems will also enable real-time resource optimisation and emissions reduction. Together, these innovations will redefine how industries maintain reliability while achieving their sustainability goals in an increasingly complex energy landscape.
