Naveen Gupta, Trev Mobility, Says Premium EV Mobility Must Compete on Reliability and Service

The next phase of India’s EV story will not be defined by how many electric vehicles we put on the road, but by how efficiently we can operate them, said Naveen Gupta, Founder and CEO, Trev Mobility, in an interview with Abha Rustagi, Associate Editor, Energetica India.

Que: Trev Mobility has expanded from two EVs to a fleet of over 100 electric vehicles. What have been the biggest operational challenges in scaling an all-electric fleet, and how have those evolved as the business has grown?

Ans: Scaling from two cars to more than 100 EVs has taught us that running an electric fleet is fundamentally different from running a conventional fleet. The biggest challenge is not just acquiring vehicles, but building the operating system around them.

With two cars, charging can be managed almost informally. At 100-plus vehicles, charging becomes a scheduling exercise involving vehicle utilisation, trip distance, charging time, driver availability and customer commitments. A vehicle sitting at a charger is effectively unavailable to the business.

Over time, our focus has therefore shifted from simply increasing the number of vehicles to improving utilisation, planning routes better and making charging predictable. In a high-utilisation fleet, operational discipline matters as much as the vehicle itself.


Que: Charging infrastructure continues to be a constraint in many cities. How does Trev manage charging schedules and vehicle availability without compromising customer experience?

Ans: For a commercial EV fleet, charging infrastructure has to be looked at differently from the perspective of a private EV owner. Our customers do not care whether a vehicle is electric or petrol; they care whether it arrives on time.

We therefore plan charging around the operating schedule rather than treating it as an activity that happens whenever a vehicle is free. Vehicles are allocated based on expected utilisation and trip requirements, while charging is planned around natural gaps in operations.

The larger issue is predictability. The number of chargers is important, but uptime, location, charging speed and reliability matter much more to a fleet operator. As the industry grows, CPOs will increasingly need to design infrastructure specifically around high-utilisation commercial fleets.


Que: Have falling battery prices, improvements in vehicle range, or newer EV models significantly changed your fleet expansion strategy over the past year?

Ans: Improvements in range and vehicle technology have certainly made commercial EV operations more practical. However, range alone does not determine whether an EV works for a fleet. The more important question is how the vehicle performs across a complete duty cycle.

For us, factors such as real-world range, charging time, reliability, passenger comfort, service support and total cost of operation are considered together. A vehicle with a slightly lower upfront cost but poor utilisation can ultimately be more expensive to operate.

The industry is also moving towards a more mature understanding of EV economics. The decision is no longer simply about buying an electric vehicle. It is about selecting the right vehicle for the right use case.


Que: Which customer segments are witnessing the fastest growth, and what factors are driving this demand?

Ans: We are seeing strong demand from customers who value reliability, convenience and a predictable travel experience rather than simply looking for the lowest-cost ride. Corporate travel, airport transfers, intercity journeys and premium city mobility are particularly relevant use cases.

There is also a broader behavioural shift happening in urban India. For many professionals, especially in large cities, mobility is increasingly becoming about access rather than ownership. They may not want the cost and responsibility of maintaining another car, but they still want a comfortable and reliable vehicle when required.

EVs add another dimension to this because customers are becoming increasingly conscious of the sustainability impact of their mobility choices.


Que: What role does technology play in route optimisation, fleet scheduling, predictive maintenance, and driver performance management within your operations?

Ans: Technology becomes increasingly important as fleet size grows because decisions that can be managed manually with 10 vehicles become difficult with 100.

Data helps us understand vehicle utilisation, trip patterns, charging requirements, route efficiency and maintenance needs. The objective is not to use technology for the sake of it, but to reduce idle time and make the fleet more predictable.

Over time, I see fleet technology moving from being largely reactive to becoming increasingly predictive. The ability to anticipate when a vehicle will need charging, servicing or intervention can have a direct impact on both utilisation and customer experience.


Que: Managing drivers is often as important as managing vehicles. How does Trev train and incentivise drivers to adapt to electric vehicles while ensuring consistent service quality?

Ans: An EV changes the way a driver operates the vehicle. Acceleration patterns, regenerative braking, range management and charging behaviour all have an impact on efficiency, so driver training becomes an important part of fleet operations.

We focus on helping drivers understand the vehicle rather than simply giving them a set of instructions. They need to know how their driving behaviour affects range, vehicle performance and ultimately the customer experience.

The other important element is service quality. A premium mobility experience is not created by the vehicle alone. The driver’s professionalism, punctuality, communication and understanding of the customer are equally important.


Que: Competition in urban mobility is increasing, with ride-hailing companies and fleet operators also expanding their EV presence. How does Trev differentiate its business model in an increasingly competitive market?

Ans: We don’t look at EV adoption alone as our differentiator because that advantage will naturally become common across the industry. The real differentiation has to come from the quality and consistency of the service.

Trev is focused on building a premium, chauffeur-driven EV mobility experience where reliability is central to the proposition. For a customer, the value is not simply getting an electric car. It is knowing that the vehicle will arrive on time, the chauffeur will be professional and the overall experience will be consistent.

As more companies enter EV mobility, I believe the market will move beyond the question of who has the most vehicles. It will increasingly be about utilisation, customer retention, operational efficiency and the ability to build a sustainable business.


Que: Are there plans to expand beyond Delhi NCR into other cities? What factors determine whether a city is ready to support a premium all-electric mobility business?

Ans: Expansion into a new city cannot be based simply on the size of the market or the number of EVs on the road. For a premium electric mobility business, the entire ecosystem needs to work.

We look at factors such as charging availability and reliability, customer demand, airport and corporate mobility, road connectivity, vehicle service infrastructure and the availability of trained drivers. Most importantly, the economics have to make sense at the fleet level.

Our approach is therefore to enter markets where there is a clear customer need and where the infrastructure can support reliable operations. The objective is not to be present in every city quickly, but to build a model that can operate sustainably and then replicate it.

The next phase of India’s EV story will not be defined by how many electric vehicles we put on the road, but by how efficiently we can operate them. For commercial mobility, the real test is whether charging, technology, vehicles and people can come together to deliver a reliable service every day.
