GreenLine Mobility CEO Madhur Taneja Explains the Shift Towards Integrated Green Freight

Que: India's logistics sector is under increasing pressure to decarbonise. How do you see GreenLine positioning itself as a leader in sustainable freight mobility?
Ans: India's freight sector is at an important inflection point, with businesses looking to reduce emissions without compromising efficiency or cost. At GreenLine, we are enabling that transition as India's largest operator of LNG- and electric-powered heavy commercial trucks.
Our approach combines cleaner vehicles with the supporting energy infrastructure, allowing customers to decarbonise their supply chains while maintaining diesel-equivalent operating economics. Today, our fleet of over 1,000 LNG and EV trucks has travelled more than 90 million kilometres, demonstrating that green freight is both commercially viable and operationally scalable. Building on this momentum, we plan to deploy 10,000 LNG and EV trucks over the coming years to accelerate the adoption of sustainable freight across India. As more companies pursue their sustainability goals, we see GreenLine playing a key role in accelerating India's transition to cleaner freight mobility.
Que: How has customer demand for green logistics evolved over the past year? Are companies now viewing sustainability as a business necessity rather than a compliance requirement?
Ans: The conversation has shifted significantly over the past year. Earlier, sustainability was often driven by compliance or ESG commitments. Today, customers increasingly view it as a strategic business imperative because it is closely linked to operational efficiency, supply chain resilience and long-term competitiveness. Many companies are looking to reduce Scope 3 emissions, but they also expect logistics partners to deliver consistent service levels and competitive operating costs. As a result, cleaner freight solutions are seeing growing adoption across sectors such as steel, cement, mining, FMCG and chemicals.
The key shift is that sustainability is no longer a standalone objective. It is becoming an integral part of how businesses design and optimise their supply chains.
Que: GreenLine has invested in both LNG and electric trucks. How do you see the two technologies complementing each other in India's freight ecosystem?
Ans: India's freight market is too diverse for a one-size-fits-all solution. Long-haul transportation has very different operating requirements from urban distribution, which is why we believe multiple technologies will coexist. LNG is currently the most practical solution for heavy, long-distance freight because it offers longer range, higher payload capacity and faster refuelling. Electric trucks, on the other hand, are well suited for shorter routes with predictable operating cycles.
Our strategy is therefore technology-agnostic. We deploy the right solution for the right application, enabling customers to reduce emissions without compromising operational performance.
The future of freight is not about choosing one technology over another—it is about building an ecosystem where each solution delivers maximum value.
Que: Infrastructure remains one of the biggest challenges for green mobility. How is GreenLine addressing the need for LNG refuelling, EV charging, and battery-swapping networks?
Ans: Infrastructure is the foundation of freight decarbonisation. Fleet adoption can only accelerate when customers are confident that reliable energy infrastructure is available across key transport corridors.
Through our subsidiary, Ultra Gas & Energy Ltd. (UGEL), we are developing a nationwide network of 100 LNG refuelling stations strategically located along major freight routes. These facilities are being designed as future-ready energy hubs with the capability to support LNG refuelling, EV charging and battery swapping.
Our objective is to build an integrated clean mobility ecosystem that gives fleet operators the confidence to transition to greener technologies while ensuring operational continuity.
Que: Fleet management is becoming increasingly data-driven. How is GreenLine leveraging technology to improve fleet efficiency and sustainability?
Ans: Technology has become a key differentiator in modern logistics. At GreenLine, we leverage connected fleet technologies to optimise route planning, monitor vehicle health, improve driver performance and maximise fleet utilisation in real time. These digital capabilities enhance operational efficiency while providing customers with greater visibility across their supply chains. Data-driven insights also help minimise downtime, improve safety and support predictive maintenance, resulting in more reliable operations and lower lifecycle costs. As freight becomes increasingly connected, technology will play an even greater role in improving efficiency and making sustainable logistics commercially more attractive.
Que: Beyond emissions reduction, what operational benefits are customers experiencing after adopting GreenLine's solutions?
Ans: Customers adopt cleaner technologies when they make business sense, and that is exactly what we are seeing. Our LNG trucks deliver diesel-equivalent performance, with comparable operating economics, while offering a longer operating range, higher payload capacity and quick refuelling—making them well suited for long-haul freight. Combined with our technology-enabled fleet management platform, they help improve fleet utilisation, reduce downtime and enhance supply chain reliability. For customers, the proposition is simple: greener logistics at the same operating cost as diesel, without compromising on performance or reliability.
Que: Are there plans to expand beyond LNG and electric trucks into adjacent clean mobility solutions?
Ans: Our immediate priority is to scale an integrated green freight ecosystem rather than focus on a single technology. Alongside expanding our fleet of LNG and electric trucks, we are investing in the supporting infrastructure required to enable widespread adoption, including LNG refuelling, EV charging and battery-swapping facilities.
Looking ahead, we believe India's freight transition will continue to evolve. LNG and electric mobility are the most practical solutions for today's market, but we will continue to evaluate emerging lower-carbon technologies such as bio-LNG as they become commercially viable. Our approach will remain technology-agnostic, with a clear focus on delivering practical and scalable decarbonisation solutions for the logistics sector.
