Solar + Storage as well as smart energy management and energy efficiency is the future for solar photovoltaic (PV). Solar storage has been growing robustly in Europe and Australia. We've launched the GroHome solution including, smart meter, smart switch, smart thermostat, says Lisa Zhang, Marketing Director, Growatt in an exclusive interview with Manu Tayal, Associate Editor, Energetica India. Lisa shared her company’s strategy amid Covid-19 scenario, new product offerings, expansion & investment plans etc.

“Being an experienced player in string inverters, how the year 2020 has been so far for Growatt amid Covid-19? Strategy to tackle?”

Though the pandemic has huge impact on the world, we are seeing growth in global shipments compared with 2019. In China, the solar market was restored in the second quarter and has shown impressive growth. Our shipments in China in Q2 are three times of that in Q1. We are seeing the biggest impact in the Americas while in Europe, where we have huge advantages, our shipments are not affected. Some markets in Europe such as Poland even report big growth. In APAC, few markets are impacted, but these markets take less percentage of our shipments. Our sales in Australia is not affected. The utility-scale market is the worst hit segment, but as we are focusing on the distributed generation market, the impact on DG is very limited. However, the pandemic has hindered the development of solar energy, but we believe it’ll get better. There’re good opportunities and the global demand is strong.

“Tell us something about your latest technology inverter offerings for the customers.”

Among the inverter manufacturers, Growatt offers the most comprehensive PV solutions. We provide solutions for residential, commercial, ground-mounted, storage and off-grid solar, and the power capacity covers the range from 1kW to 253kW.

“Do you have some investment or expansion plans in near term?”

We are now building a new manufacturing plant that covers an area of 200,000 square meters, incorporating an administrative office, staff dormitories, an entertainment venue, an exhibition hall, warehouses, a freight centre and advanced, integrated production lines. Its annual output is expected to be around 10 GW and we plan to move in by the end of the year.

“How much percentage of your revenue do you invest in the R&D infrastructure every year?”

Growatt is an enterprise of technologies, and tech innovations are in our blood. We highly value the investment in R&D, and each year we invest 10%, a high proportion of our revenue in product and technology innovations. We invest in infrastructure at different stages.

“What are the current and future target markets for Growatt and in which segments rooftop, C&I, utility etc?”

Our focus is still on the distributed generation market such as residential and commercial rooftop solar where we have huge advantages. In 2019, according to the report released by IHS Markit, we ranked third in global shipments of single-phase inverter, fifth in three-phase string inverter and in Asia, we are No.1 in residential inverters. It all shows our advantages and leading position in DG solar, and in the future, we’ll continue to strengthen our position in the segment. However, this year we are launching 1500V large power inverter as we look to extend our strength in string inverters and provide premium products for ground-mounted solar plants.

“What do you think, in future which technologies will likely to lead the inverter market?”

We've launched the GroHome solution including, smart meter, smart switch, smart thermostat. With the GroHome solution, users can turn on the air conditioners or water heaters remotely by loging onto APP.
The GroHome solution provides homeowners a combination of intelligent solar energy generation with energy efficiency. It reduces the household's overall energy consumption while increasing self-consumption of PV power.

“Any specific plans for Indian market? Your market USP against peers?”

For the Indian market, first we focus on rooftop solar. In 2019, we are the No.1 inverter supplier for India rooftop solar plants. We’ll continue to provide premium products with high price performance for Indian market. We’ll continue to build a local team in India and provide localized marketing, warehousing and service. We hope to contribute to the development of solar energy in India and provide clear and convenient access to clean smart energy for Indian customers.
