From Grid to Green: AspenTech’s Role in Powering Energy Transition Through Digital Innovation

June 12, 2025. By Abha Rustagi

Emerson’s Aspen Technology business will support Indian industries in building greater operational resilience and advancing their digital maturity, said Dr. Vikas Dhole, SVP of Product Management, and Abhinav Chowdhary, Country Manager, AspenTech, in an interview with Abha Rustagi, Associate Editor, Energetica India.

Que: From a global product management perspective, how does AspenTech define 'Industrial AI,' and what makes it fundamentally different from general AI applications?

Ans: Industrial AI is central to many of the products across Emerson’s AspenTech suite and is important to Emerson’s ability to help companies achieve their lofty operational excellence and sustainability goals. Emerson defines Industrial AI as a specific type of AI that combines AI with domain expertise for guardrails, robustness and trusted results. Emerson’s domain expertise encapsulates engineering fundamentals as well as 40+ years of AspenTech innovation, knowledge of industrial assets, and industry experience.

Unlike most other AI systems, Industrial AI is explainable, and not a “black box” that produces results with no way to trace where an answer came from. It’s built with expert guidance, ensuring operators understand the algorithms’ possible behaviors. Industrial AI also has built-in guardrails – such as mandating human intervention in some situations or restricting an algorithm’s possible responses – so companies can trust that the AI won’t accidentally trigger wrong recommendations.

Overall, Emerson’s Industrial AI is uniquely equipped to accommodate the complex and essential requirements asset-intensive industries have for safety, reliability and environmental stewardship.

Que: How do you measure success when it comes to implementing Industrial AI in large-scale operations? What KPIs or outcomes do you track?

Ans: Successful outcomes for Industrial AI implementations will look different for every company, but Emerson often sees customers get the greatest value from Industrial AI in the categories of agility, guidance, and automation.

In the context of Industrial AI, agility helps organisations quickly adapt to business conditions and opportunities to create value, guidance uplevels the workforce to guide them through decisions faster, and automation frees up engineers for more critical activities by optimising tasks.

Que: How is AspenTech integrating sustainability into its technology stack, particularly in areas like industrial electrification and microgrids?

Ans: Emerson’s Aspen Technology business is a key partner for many customers in helping them navigate the energy transition and achieve net zero targets. Many of Emerson’s solutions help with this, including AspenTech Microgrid Management System™.

Microgrids give companies more control over how power is produced, distributed and consumed across assets, allowing them to optimise day-to-day operations. That management capability also enables companies to incorporate renewable resources, like solar and wind power, and battery storage into their operations, helping them optimise asset power consumption and cost as they align OPEX with carbon neutrality objectives.

Que: Could you share insights from your partnerships with Aramco, TenneT, or Envision, and how co-innovation accelerates breakthroughs?

Ans: Collaboration and co-innovation are critical to developing the solutions necessary for asset-intensive industries to meet new challenges around the energy transition in the coming decades.

Asset-intensive companies are increasingly building partner ecosystems to successfully execute strategies in their transition to the new energy system, including by supporting the development and scale-up of new process technologies.

Emerson’s Aspen Technology business works with customers and partners to co-innovate and advance digitalisation throughout asset-intensive industries, to help solve specific customer challenges and address industry challenges. By leveraging our partners’ complementary expertise and offerings, we can better understand customer requirements, prioritise use cases, formulate novel approaches and jointly develop solutions.

Que: Could you highlight a few success stories where AspenTech’s technology delivered measurable benefits—such as reduced costs, improved uptime, or enhanced operational safety?

Ans: In one example, a top five global chemical company is using AspenTech Industrial AI-based hybrid models to profile the reactor unit performance for one of its high-value chemicals. Through the use of hybrid models, the company is now leveraging process history data to build nonlinear relationships that accurately predict process performance. The result has been better prediction of actual performance and a 10 percent yield improvement for this process.

In another example, a green technology company based in Asia is using performance engineering and process control technology within the AspenTech product suite to create an economic path for renewables to green ammonia. The company’s original goal was to design and operate a hydrogen and ammonia production site using 100 percent renewable energy. With the help of AspenTech solutions, they’ve been able to develop an advanced electrolyser that can rapidly adapt to fluctuations in electricity loads from renewable energy, scaling green ammonia production from 10 percent to 100 percent capacity within 30 minutes, among other results.

These are just two of the many customer success stories highlighting how Emerson’s global customers are using AspenTech solutions to enable their operational excellence and sustainability goals.

Que: In the next 5 to 10 years, how do you see AspenTech helping India’s industries become more resilient and digitally advanced?

Ans: India is at a pivotal point in its industrial journey, where building resilience and adopting digital technologies will be key to navigating future challenges for supply chain, sustainability, or market shifts.

Over the next decade, Emerson’s Aspen Technology business will support Indian industries in building greater operational resilience and advancing their digital maturity through Industrial AI, domain expertise, and scalable data solutions. We're already seeing an impact through AI-driven optimisation, workflow automation, and predictive maintenance tools that improve uptime, efficiency, and decision-making.

Solutions from our Digital Grid Management product suite are helping to improve grid reliability and forecast renewable energy generation, which is critical as India navigates its energy transition. Meanwhile, our industrial data fabric enables seamless integration and contextualisation of data across systems, making digital transformation both scalable and efficient.

From sustainability to performance, AspenTech tools have helped companies reduce energy use by up to 20 percent, cut emissions by up to 50 percent, and save millions in operational and capital costs. These outcomes demonstrate the practical value of targeted digital innovation and our ongoing commitment to supporting India’s industrial growth in a rapidly changing global landscape.

We look forward to helping industries in India and around the world strengthen their digital foundations so they can respond effectively to change while continuing to grow responsibly and competitively.
