RenewSys already holds an Indian patent for backsheet technology, with eight additional patent applications in advanced stages of grant. This strong innovation pipeline reflects the company’s commitment to developing differentiated materials that support the future of solar manufacturing, said Avinash Hiranandani, Vice Chairman and MD, RenewSys India, in an interview with Energetica India.

Que: How has the market responded to your PV encapsulant and Backsheet portfolio so far? What trends are you observing in terms of customer adoption and demand?

Ans: The response to our PV encapsulant and backsheet portfolio has been extremely encouraging. As module technologies continue to evolve, manufacturers are increasingly prioritising material quality and long-term reliability alongside efficiency. This shift has created strong demand for advanced encapsulants and backsheets that enhance module performance while ensuring durability in diverse climatic conditions.

We are seeing growing adoption of solutions that offer superior protection against moisture ingress, UV exposure, potential-induced degradation (PID), and other environmental stresses. Customers are also placing greater emphasis on consistent product quality, secure domestic supply chains, and technical collaboration. As India's solar manufacturing ecosystem continues to expand, there is a clear preference for materials that not only meet today's performance requirements but are also compatible with next-generation cell technologies.

Que: What are the latest advancements or innovations your company has introduced in PV encapsulant and Backsheet technologies? How do these developments improve module performance, durability, and long-term reliability?

Ans: Innovation has always been central to RenewSys' materials business. We have recently introduced advanced encapsulant solutions such as CONSERV® AA and CONSERV® ACE (Anti-Acid EPE), which are engineered with enhanced acid-neutralising properties to address the evolving requirements of high-efficiency cell technologies. These materials offer improved resistance to UV degradation, moisture ingress, and PID, contributing to superior module reliability over the product's lifetime.

On the backsheet front, we have developed next-generation PRESERV® solutions with enhanced moisture barrier, UV resistance, and weatherability. Our PRESERV® TF USB backsheet delivers an ultra-low Water Vapour Transmission Rate (WVTR) of 0.01 g/m²/day, providing exceptional protection against moisture ingress.

These innovations enable module manufacturers to achieve higher energy yields, lower degradation rates, and improved long-term performance. They also support Glass-to-Backsheet (G2B) module architectures, offering advantages such as reduced module weight, easier handling and transportation, and improved resistance to mechanical damage such as glass breakage, while maintaining high reliability in demanding operating environments.

Que: What differentiates your encapsulant and Backsheet solutions from other products available in the market?

Ans: Our focus has always been on engineering materials that deliver long-term performance rather than simply meeting minimum industry specifications.

For example, our EPE encapsulants incorporate one of the highest POE content formulations available in the market, providing superior moisture resistance and long-term reliability. Similarly, our backsheets are manufactured using laminated constructions rather than coated constructions, resulting in better structural integrity, improved durability, and enhanced protection against environmental degradation.

Beyond the products themselves, our differentiation lies in our integrated approach. We work closely with module manufacturers throughout product development and qualification, offering technical support, application expertise, and customised material solutions. Combined with rigorous quality control and continuous innovation, this enables our customers to optimise manufacturing efficiency while delivering highly reliable solar modules.

Que: How are your products addressing the evolving requirements of TOPCon, HJT, and Back Contact (BC) solar module technologies?

Ans: Each new cell technology presents unique material challenges, and our product development strategy is closely aligned with these evolving requirements.

TOPCon technologies require encapsulants with low acid generation, excellent moisture barriers, and strong PID resistance. HJT modules demand superior UV protection to minimise UV-induced degradation while maintaining high optical performance. Back Contact (BC) architectures create opportunities for optimised encapsulant configurations that enhance manufacturing flexibility and module efficiency.

Our encapsulants are specifically engineered to provide high optical transparency, excellent adhesion, moisture resistance, and long-term environmental stability, making them suitable across these advanced cell platforms.

Complementing these are our PRESERV® 300 TF SB and PRESERV® TF USB backsheets, which offer ultra-high moisture barrier properties, excellent hydrolytic stability, and outstanding UV resistance. Together, these solutions help manufacturers maximise module efficiency, extend service life, and improve reliability across diverse climatic conditions.

Que: How is your R&D team preparing for the next generation of high-efficiency PV modules and evolving industry standards?

Ans: Continuous innovation is fundamental to our growth strategy. Our R&D efforts are focused not only on today's technologies but also on the emerging requirements of HJT, Back Contact, Perovskite, and future photovoltaic architectures.

Our NABL-accredited R&D centre is equipped with advanced facilities for material characterisation, reliability testing, and product benchmarking. We work closely with leading research institutions and industry partners in India and globally to accelerate the development of next-generation encapsulants and backsheets.

Innovation remains one of our core strengths. RenewSys already holds an Indian patent for backsheet technology, with eight additional patent applications in advanced stages of grant. This strong innovation pipeline reflects our commitment to developing differentiated materials that support the future of solar manufacturing.

Que: What roles do quality assurance and testing play in ensuring the long-term reliability of your encapsulant and backsheet products?

Ans: Quality is embedded into every stage of our manufacturing process. Our Integrated Management System (IMS), supported by an ISO 9001-certified Quality Management System, ensures comprehensive quality control from raw material qualification through finished product inspection.

Our encapsulants and backsheets undergo extensive laboratory validation as well as field performance evaluations. Testing includes assessments for UV resistance, moisture barrier performance, thermal stability, adhesion, weatherability, and long-term module reliability under accelerated ageing conditions.

These rigorous validation protocols ensure that our materials consistently perform over the 25-plus-year operating life expected of modern solar modules, providing confidence to module manufacturers, project developers, and asset owners alike.

Que: What are your growth plans for the Indian market, and how do you see demand evolving for advanced module materials over the next three to five years?

Ans: India's solar manufacturing sector is entering a transformative phase, driven by supportive government policies, significant capacity expansion, and the rapid adoption of advanced cell technologies. As module manufacturers strive for higher efficiency, greater reliability, and longer operational lifespans, we expect demand for high-performance encapsulants and backsheets to grow substantially over the next three to five years.

At RenewSys, we remain committed to strengthening our leadership in photovoltaic materials through continuous investment in innovation, manufacturing excellence, and advanced material technologies. As India's first integrated manufacturer of solar PV modules and key components, we are uniquely positioned to develop solutions that address the evolving requirements of next-generation cell technologies while ensuring consistent quality and supply reliability.

Looking ahead, we see increasing demand for materials specifically engineered for TOPCon, HJT, Back Contact, and emerging cell architectures. Our focus will remain on delivering innovative, high-performance materials that enable module manufacturers to improve efficiency, durability, and long-term energy yield, while supporting India's ambition to become a global hub for solar manufacturing.
