Net-Zero Journey Accelerates as World of Circular Economy and EKI Energy Services Collaborate
April 21, 2023. By Anurima Mondal
Que: Can you share with us the story behind the creation of World of Circular Economy and how you came to provide consultancy services for carbon capture, calculation, and offsetting?
Ans: As per UNICEF’s research, India’s average temperature has risen by around 0.7 degree Celsius during 1901 -2018. In 2019, India was the 7th most affected country due to climate change led extreme events such as floods, drought, cyclone. Events like these prompted the team behind WOCE to think that something has to be done to address climate change. So in 2020, we started doing research and started exploring ideas. Then in 2021, we saw lot of companies making pledges to become carbon neutral by 2040. Though we saw the pledges being made but we saw very little action. Going by- 'what can't be measured can't be captured,' we thought of creating WOCE with a goal to provide products which will allow individuals and organizations to capture, calculate and report their individual carbon footprint and take required actions to reduce or offset the same.
While we were building products, we saw an opportunity where we noticed businesses’ struggle to define the net zero transformation roadmap, and thus, we started providing consulting services as well to help our clients define the roadmap and track adherence to it.
We launched two carbon emission management products, last year- Carbon Book (app-based) and Carbon Ledger (web-based).
Today, our blend of consulting (WOCE Consulting) and technology (WOCE LABS) solutions includes defining sustainability strategy and roadmaps, renewables trading, carbon trading, and regulatory compliance solutions, sustainability education and training, as well as a platform and product suite for sustainability measurement (scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions reporting), analytics, and performance tracking. We are proud to be associated with EKI Energy Services as now we together complete an enterprise’s sustainability life cycle with offsetting as well as carbon asset management.
Que: How do you see the partnership with EKI contributing to the push towards net-zero, and how does renewable energy fit into this equation?
Ans: EKI is 14+ year old company and a global market leader with deep expertise in the realm of climate change, carbon offset solutions, and carbon asset management. The partnership between EKI and World of Circular Economy is unique as both together provide one-stop-solution to an enterprise’s sustainability journey while reducing its carbon footprint to achieve net-zero emissions.
Through this partnership, we hope to drive significant progress towards a net-zero future for India and beyond. Our products are readily available for EKI's clients to use, providing them with a comprehensive bouquet of sustainability solutions with integrated technology. The alliance also fosters joint development of digital monitoring reporting & verification (DMRV) solutions, IoT-enabled digitization of carbon footprint measurement services for EKI's current & future projects.
Renewable energy will play a crucial role in this journey, and we will also be looking at offering solutions such as renewables trading apart from carbon trading to enable businesses to transition to renewable energy and offset their carbon emissions.
Que: How does World of Circular Economy view the role of renewable energy in an enterprise’s sustainability lifecycle?
Ans: Renewable energy plays a crucial role in an enterprises’ sustainability life cycle. We advise businesses and organizations to incorporate renewable energy into their sustainability practices to reduce their carbon footprint and achieve their climate goals.
To become carbon neutral, every organization has to implement the 3 Rs: Renew, Recycle and Reuse. Post application of these 3 Rs, one should consider using offsets to get to net zero.
Any renewable source of energy such as solar energy or wind energy or renewable diesel will play a critical role in reducing the emission footprint at the source itself. Further our partnership with EKI, which is the largest supplier credit in India, will certainly enable us to provide carbon credits to our clients and enable us to provides end to end solution starting from capture, calculation, reporting and offsetting.
Que: What new opportunities and offerings do you envision emerging in the areas of renewable energy and sustainability?
Ans: Along with EKI, we will have new opportunities to develop innovative solutions that will help businesses and organizations reduce their carbon footprint and achieve net-zero emissions, starting with consultancy about minimizing carbon emissions to offsetting them. We believe that 'what can't be measured can't be captured,' and here, technology is the best tool to harness. We see opportunities to develop more novel technologies and solutions that will improve the accuracy and efficiency of carbon capture, calculation, and offsetting. We envision new possibilities in the development of renewable energy solutions. We are open to integrating renewable energy solutions into our portfolio in the future. If we do integrate renewable energy solutions, we hope to make a positive impact by enabling more businesses to transition to renewable energy and achieve their sustainability goals.
