India’s CNG, CBG and Hydrogen Push Makes it Strategic Market for KonveGas: Alexander Enulescu

Que: India is rapidly expanding its CNG, biogas, and emerging hydrogen ecosystem. What do you see as the biggest infrastructure bottleneck slowing wider adoption of gaseous fuels today?

Ans: Storage is the primary bottleneck. India has made real progress on the production and policy side - CBG plants are coming online, CNG stations are expanding, but the vessels used to store and move that gas are still largely conventional steel, which limits how efficiently gas can travel from the point of production to the point of use. Until storage technology catches up with production capacity, the full potential of this ecosystem would not be realised.


Que: Storage technology often receives less attention than fuel production or vehicle deployment. How critical is storage innovation to the commercial viability of CNG, biogas and hydrogen mobility?

Ans: It's central to the whole equation, not a peripheral issue. Storage technology determines how much fuel a vehicle can carry per trip, how often it needs refuelling and ultimately how efficient the entire distribution network is. This becomes even more pronounced with hydrogen, which requires higher pressures and stricter performance standards than CNG or compressed biogas. That brings its own cost and infrastructure challenges, but the good news is India doesn't have to start from scratch the operational learning from CNG and CBG storage translates directly into de-risking hydrogen storage as that market matures.


Que: KonveGas specialises in Type 4 composite cylinders. How do these compare with conventional steel cylinders in terms of weight, safety, lifecycle costs, and operational efficiency?

Ans: Our Type 4 glass-fibre composite cylinders are up to 75% lighter than traditional steel and entirely corrosion-resistant.

That weight reduction alone improves payload and range per trip. On safety, our cylinders are certified for a 20-year service life through conservative design and extensive testing burst pressure, cyclic fatigue, impact resistance, fire exposure to standards including ECE R110, ISO 11119-3 and EN 12245. We've also accumulated hundreds of thousands of kilometres of real-world deployment across passenger and heavy-duty vehicles with no durability or safety issues identified.

On lifecycle costs, the comparison shouldn't be about upfront price alone it's about total cost of ownership. Longer service life, lower maintenance versus metal vessels and better payload efficiency over the operating life of a vehicle or system add up to a stronger economic case over time, even where the initial cost is higher than steel.


Que: KonveGas has indicated a 'Make in India' manufacturing intent. What factors make India an attractive market for local production and investment?

Ans: India isn't just a market for us, it's the future global hub for green energy innovation. The scale of the CNG, CBG and hydrogen push here is unmatched and the policy environment is pragmatic and forward-looking. Local production shortens lead times, cuts logistics emissions and cost and with the India–EU Free Trade Agreement moving toward final ratification, an Indian manufacturing base also positions us to serve the wider regional corridor, not just the domestic market. That combination of scale, policy support and trade positioning makes India a strategic priority rather than just an opportunistic entry.


Que: Are you currently evaluating partnerships with Indian OEMs, gas distributors, or infrastructure providers? What kind of collaborations will be most important for scaling adoption?

Ans: Yes, we are actively looking for collaboration. Following our engagement at India Energy Week in Goa, we've moved from intent to action. Our presence at platforms like the BBB Summit in New Delhi is specifically about finding the right Indian partners in manufacturing, distribution and infrastructure to help us scale locally under the ‘Make in India’ spirit. We are inviting collaboration across the spectrum, from energy PSUs to private automotive manufacturers. The partnerships that will matter most are joint ventures for local manufacturing and close collaboration with OEMs and EPCs so that composite cylinders are designed into vehicles and infrastructure from the start, rather than retrofitted later.


Que: With global supply chains facing increasing uncertainty, how is KonveGas positioning itself to support customers seeking localised and secure sourcing?

Ans: Our approach to scale has always been about resilience and localisation rather than volume alone. We use a modular manufacturing model standardised Type-4 production cells that can be replicated in different markets while holding the same quality and safety standards. In India, that means combining Swedish engineering and validated processes with regional production partnerships, which reduces lead times, logistics emissions and cost. We have also chosen glass fibre over carbon fibre specifically because it draws on more abundant, regionally available raw materials rather than a concentrated global supply chain that decision itself is a hedge against the kind of disruption many industries are now facing.
