ZF Wind Power has achieved a total production of 50 GW gearbox capacity at its manufacturing facility in Coimbatore, India. This milestone, according to the company, is a testament to ZF's early entry and sustained commitment to the Indian wind market.

“The ZF Wind Power plant at Coimbatore is the largest plant for wind gearbox production in the world, excluding China. By establishing a key export hub and continuously investing in local capabilities, ZF plays a pivotal role in shaping India's wind energy landscape,” claimed the company.

The company has invested about EUR 230 million, till December 2023 in ZF Wind Power Coimbatore. The long-term strategic investments in the plant are dedicated to expanding its manufacturing capacity from 9 to 12 GW per year to meet the growth envisioned for the wind market. This is coupled with the installation of a 13 MW test rig.

Commenting on the development, Dr. Peter Laier, Member of the Board of Management, ZF Group stated, “ZF Wind Power is a leading gearbox supplier in India with this plant providing gearboxes to both domestic and global customers under – Make in India for India and for the World. The ZF Group’s investment in the expansion of production facilities is a testament to the long-term goals and growth potential for the region. We stay committed to the sustainability objectives, and with the expanded facilities we will be positioned to contribute significantly to achieve India’s ambition of doubling the nation’s wind power capacity by 2030.”

Akash Passey, President ZF Group in India commented, “We are proud to be the only plant in India that achieved this milestone. Our strategic focus on sustainability and ZF’s DNA of quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction has enabled us to maintain our leadership position in the Indian wind gearbox market.”

He further added that as a part of the company’s technology and capacity expansion, ZF has already committed to investing INR 750 crores earlier this year during the Global Investors meet in Chennai. The expansion planned is focused on leveraging the market potential and meeting customer requirements.

“We strive for local production that’s as close as possible to our partner’s destination. Advanced and sustainable logistics maximise our global manufacturing footprint while minimising the ecological footprint. ZF Wind Power’s investment is our commitment to flexibility in local and global production to address the dynamic customer demand,” asserted Felix Henseler, CEO of ZF Wind Power.

Deepak Pohekar, ED and Head ZF Wind Power plant Coimbatore mentioned, “Our Coimbatore plant is a state-of-the-art manufacturing hub spread over more than 120,000 sq. meters. Along with production, its robust centre for research and development actively works on global solutions. This facility also acts as one of the major service hubs for ZF Wind Power.”

The Coimbatore plant incorporates advanced technologies and processes to minimise its environmental footprint and contribute to a greener future. And, this expansion aligns with ZF’s broader sustainability goals and commitment to carbon neutrality by 2040.
