Zelestra Signs PPA with EDP for 170 MWdc Solar Projects with 400 MWh BESS in Spain
Zelestra and EDP have signed a first-of-its-kind long-term PPA in Spain, combining 170 MWdc of solar and 400 MWh of battery storage to deliver clean energy beyond solar hours and cut over 40,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

Zelestra, a global multi-technology renewable energy company, and EDP, a global energy company, have signed, for the first time in the Spanish market, an innovative long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) which combines large scale solar and battery storage projects and technologies.
This agreement will allow Zelestra to build a project consisting of 170 MWdc of solar capacity and 400 MWh of battery storage located in Trujillo, Extremadura, Spain.
The hybrid structured product is designed to ensure that the battery can always be fully charged daily by the solar plant in all weather conditions, allowing EDP the flexibility to have clean energy outside of ‘normal solar hours’ and at traditionally high-demand, high-price periods of time. This solution will also contribute to reducing the intensity of CO2 emissions during periods of peak power demand, helping to displace gas plants that typically operate during this time.
The total anticipated annual production in Trujillo will be in the region of 300 GWh, preventing over 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year, stated Zelestra.
With a portfolio of approximately 30 GW of carbon-free projects in 13 countries (5.5 GW contracted with customers and in operations, construction, or pre-construction stage), Zelestra is a vertically integrated company specialising in the development, commercialisation, construction and operation of large-scale renewable energy projects. The company is backed by EQT with more than EUR 273 billion in assets under management.
EDP has a total installed capacity of more than 29 GW in Europe, North America, South America and Asia-Pacific. In Spain, EDP possesses more than 5,000 MW of installed capacity, 1.4 million supply points in distribution and a portfolio of commercialisation to business customers of electricity, natural gas and services.
