World EV Day 2026: India’s EV Surge Raises the Next Big Question - Can Infrastructure Keep Pace?
As sales increase, consumers will judge EVs not only on purchase price or range but also on the quality of the infrastructure and services surrounding them. Charging availability, uptime, roadside assistance, battery reliability, after-sales service and repair capability will increasingly determine whether the rapid growth of EV sales can be sustained.

India’s electric vehicle market is moving into a new phase of adoption, with record monthly sales increasingly shifting the industry’s focus from whether consumers will buy electric vehicles to whether the ecosystem can make ownership affordable, reliable and convenient at scale.
The country recorded its highest-ever monthly EV retail sales in July, with 3,27,901 units sold, an increase of more than 66 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Nearly one in every eight vehicles retailed during the month was electric.
The July record has since been followed by strong demand in August. FADA data cited by industry executives showed 2,98,448 EVs retailed during the month, up 52.9 percent year on year, with EV penetration reaching 12.3 percent, compared with 9.5 percent a year earlier.
The numbers give added weight to the message behind World EV Day 2026, being marked on September 9 under the theme ‘Switching Electric: driving down the cost of motoring’. The campaign is putting affordability and the economics of EV ownership at the centre of the transition.
That focus reflects a broader change in the Indian EV market. For early adopters, the case for an electric vehicle was often built around emissions, technology and government incentives. For the mass market, the calculation is increasingly simpler: how much does an EV cost to run, how much does it cost to buy and maintain, and can the owner depend on it every day?
India’s July numbers suggest that calculation is increasingly favouring electric mobility. Electric two-wheelers were the largest contributor to the growth, with sales crossing 2 lakh units for the first time. Passenger EV sales rose more than 83 percent year on year to 32,928 units, while electric commercial vehicle sales increased sharply as fleet operators expanded electrification.
The shift is also happening across vehicle categories rather than being confined to premium passenger cars. Electric three-wheelers already have a dominant position in their segment, while two-wheelers are increasingly becoming the volume engine of India’s EV transition.
But the next phase could be harder than the first.

For households, the most immediate infrastructure issue may be closer to home than the public charging network. Residential charging requires adequate electrical capacity, safe wiring and appropriate equipment, particularly in older buildings and homes that were never designed around high-power charging loads.

Nearly half of Indian homes can't support one safely today, because charging readiness has been treated as an afterthought to the vehicle sale, not a parallel investment. Fixing that in the next three to five years means EV adoption stops depending on where someone lives and starts depending only on whether they want one.”
Anil Kumar, Founder & CEO, Charger on Wheels, said, "A large number of urban EV owners, particularly those living in apartments and high-rise societies, may not have adequate electrical load, dedicated parking or the infrastructure required to install a home charger. The other strategic question is how much of this expanding EV value chain India can build domestically.
The country's long-term competitiveness will depend not only on vehicle assembly but also on batteries, cells, cathode and anode materials, power electronics, motors and other components. That is particularly important as manufacturers seek to reduce exposure to global supply-chain disruptions and improve cost competitiveness.

India's record sales therefore mark less a finish line than a change in the nature of the EV challenge.
The initial question was whether electric mobility could find a market. The July sales record, followed by continued growth in August, suggests that question is increasingly settled.
The harder question is whether the industry can now lower the total cost of ownership while building an ecosystem capable of supporting millions of vehicles every day.
That means cheaper batteries, affordable vehicles, reliable charging, stronger service networks, rigorous testing and a deeper domestic supply chain. It also means integrating transport demand with the country's wider electricity system.
For World EV Day 2026, the significance of India's record sales is therefore not simply that more people are buying EVs. It is that electric mobility is moving from a technology story into a mainstream consumer and infrastructure story, where cost, reliability and trust will determine how far and how fast the transition goes.
