The West Bengal government has unveiled an ambitious renewable energy programme to install two lakh rooftop solar systems across the state under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, as part of its 2026-27 Budget.
Presenting the Budget, State Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta announced a INR 100 crore allocation for the rooftop solar initiative, which aims to promote clean energy adoption, reduce electricity bills, and strengthen energy security across households. The government also announced an additional INR 5,000 power subsidy for SC/ST families to support wider participation in the scheme.
The Minister also announced that the state will work towards an Open Access policy to encourage greater solar power generation and consumption. The policy is expected to facilitate affordable clean energy access for industries while supporting West Bengal's climate and sustainability goals.
In a major infrastructure announcement, the Minister also revealed plans to develop a greenfield airport near Kalyani in Nadia district. The proposed airport, requiring around 1,000–1,500 acres of land, is expected to improve regional connectivity, attract investments, and create employment opportunities.
The Kalyani airport project is part of a broader aviation development plan that includes proposed airports at Purulia, Malda, and Balurghat under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme.
The announcements were made as part of West Bengal's INR 4.39 lakh crore Budget for FY 2026-27, which emphasises renewable energy expansion, infrastructure development, and economic growth.
