Welspun New Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla (Kandla Port), for the development of green methanol infrastructure aimed at supporting India’s maritime decarbonization efforts.

The agreement was formalised during India Maritime Week 2025, marking a key step in advancing cleaner marine fuel solutions and sustainable bunkering operations, the company stated in a social media post.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority, and Kapil Maheshwari, Managing Director and CEO, Welspun New Energy.

The partnership will focus on establishing facilities to produce and supply green methanol, a low-carbon alternative to conventional marine fuels. This initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy to promote green shipping and reduce the carbon footprint of its maritime sector.

Welspun New Energy currently holds 20,000 acres of land in Gujarat for setting up 5 GW of renewable energy capacity to produce green hydrogen and its derivatives. Additionally, the company has been allocated 200 acres of land at Deendayal Port for developing green fuel infrastructure, strengthening its position in India’s emerging green energy value chain.

Speaking on the collaboration, Maheshwari said, “This partnership marks a critical stride in building India’s green maritime ecosystem. By integrating renewable energy with sustainable marine fuel infrastructure, we aim to catalyse the transition toward cleaner propulsion systems and elevate India’s stature within the global green economy.”

The development of green methanol infrastructure at Kandla Port is expected to contribute to India’s decarbonisation roadmap and support international efforts toward cleaner maritime operations.
