Waaree Energies has announced plans to set up India’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh, marking a major step in strengthening the country’s domestic energy storage manufacturing ecosystem.
The proposed greenfield facility will be established at Rambilli in Anakapalli district with an investment of INR 8,175 crore and is expected to generate around 3,000 direct jobs, according to official sources.
The Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has granted in-principle approval for the project. The gigafactory will have an annual production capacity of 16 GWh and will cover the entire battery value chain. This includes lithium-ion cell manufacturing, battery pack assembly, and large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for grid applications.
Officials said that the end-to-end manufacturing model is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported lithium-ion cells and strengthening domestic supply chains for energy storage technologies.
State Minister for IT and Industries Nara Lokesh termed the investment a 'significant milestone' for India’s clean energy ambitions and manufacturing self-reliance.
He said that the project would contribute to the country’s Aatmanirbharta goals by enabling local production of a strategic technology critical for renewable energy integration and electric mobility.
At present, India imports a large share of its lithium-ion battery cells, primarily from East Asian markets. The Waaree facility is expected to support three key sectors, renewable energy storage, electric vehicles, and grid stabilisation.
The project aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, which aims to build a complete ecosystem for clean power generation, storage, and equipment manufacturing.
With increasing investments in advanced energy technologies and supportive industrial policies, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as an emerging hub for clean-tech manufacturing. The proposed gigafactory is seen as a major backward integration move that will enable the state to not only generate renewable power but also manufacture critical storage technologies domestically.
