Canada-based subsurface engineering firm VZFOX is entering India through the Team Canada Trade Mission to support mature oilfield redevelopment, enhanced recovery and reservoir optimisation, as the country seeks to strengthen domestic hydrocarbon production and reduce import dependence.
The company plans to establish an office in Bengaluru with an initial team of five members by the end of 2026, expanding its local workforce as business grows. It will focus on mature-field revitalisation, enhanced and improved oil recovery (EOR/IOR), injection optimisation, reservoir analysis and field redevelopment, while also supporting carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and carbon-storage projects.
VZFOX was selected to participate in the Government of Canada's Team Canada Trade Mission to India as part of a delegation focused on clean technology and the energy transition. The initiative provides the company with an entry point into the Indian market, where operators are seeking ways to improve recovery from existing oil and gas assets.
The company’s services include reservoir characterisation, production and pressure analysis, identifying reservoir compartments, optimising injection strategies and screening infill drilling and recompletion opportunities. These assessments are intended to help operators identify additional recovery potential and evaluate the technical and economic viability of interventions in ageing fields.
VZFOX brings more than two decades of Canadian experience in subsurface engineering, reservoir management and injection engineering. It advises oil and gas operators on reducing subsurface uncertainty and linking reservoir analysis with field-development strategies, capital allocation and project implementation.
The company's India strategy centres on building partnerships with domestic operators, engineering organisations, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies and project developers. It also plans to develop Indian engineering talent that can contribute to its international operations.
Vick Saxon, managing partner and director of VZFOX, said that India had strong engineering capabilities, a substantial base of producing assets and an ongoing need to strengthen domestic energy production. He said that the company aimed to help operators improve recovery from existing assets by applying Canadian expertise in complex and mature reservoirs.
Saxon added that VZFOX viewed India as a long-term technical market rather than a short-term opportunity arising from the trade mission. He also pointed to growing investment in carbon management and lower-carbon development as areas where the company could contribute.
Vinay Kumar, executive director and senior advisor at VZFOX, said that the company would initially focus on developing a small number of meaningful relationships with Indian energy-sector participants rather than rapidly expanding its workforce. The company intends to build recurring technical engagements before scaling its local presence.
India's rising dependence on imported crude oil provides the backdrop for the company's entry. According to the figures cited by VZFOX, crude oil import dependence reached 88.7 percent in FY26, compared with 85.5 percent in FY22. Domestic crude oil production declined from 29.7 million metric tonnes to 28 million metric tonnes over the same period.
Canada's experience in mature hydrocarbon basins is central to VZFOX's India strategy. The country ranks fourth globally in crude oil production and fifth in natural gas production. The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin accounts for 92 percent of Canada's oil production and all its marketable natural gas, according to the company.09
