Vedanta Aluminium has strengthened its climate action credentials with an 8.96 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity since FY21, a planned 1,500 MW renewable power sourcing by 2030, and 100 percent fly ash utilisation, according to its latest ESG disclosures for FY25.
The company unveiled three major sustainability report, the Sustainable Development Report, Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), and Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), highlighting its progress in alignment with India’s Net Zero 2070 vision.
Guided by its ESG mission of Transforming for Good, Vedanta Aluminium is decarbonising smelters, refining operations, and integrating clean energy while advancing circular economy practices and community programs.
The company’s inaugural TNFD Report adopts the global LEAP (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, Prepare) framework to manage nature-related risks, with a goal of achieving No Net Loss by 2050 and biodiversity management plans across all sites. Meanwhile, the TCFD Report details its climate risk and resilience strategy, setting a new benchmark in corporate transparency.
In FY25, Vedanta Aluminium produced 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium, accounting for over half of India’s output, while maintaining zero environmental non-compliance. It also secured the ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) certification and ranked second globally in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024 for the aluminium industry.
“Our sustainability strategy is not just about compliance, it’s our growth model,” said Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium. “We’re showing how even a hard-to-abate sector can combine renewable energy, innovation, and circularity to drive meaningful climate action," he noted.
As part of its clean energy transition, Vedanta Aluminium has partnered with GAIL Gas Limited to supply natural gas to its Jharsuguda smelter. The shift, expected by end-2025, will reduce emissions by 47,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually through a new 7.5 km pipeline supplying 32,000 SCM/day under a five-year agreement.
Reinforcing its circular economy leadership, the company achieved 100% ash utilisation, repurposing 12.08 million tonnes for road construction, brick making, and cement co-processing. It also recycled and reused 14.6 million tonnes of waste in FY25, while advancing water conservation, biodiversity, and mine restoration projects.
With over 100 tech-driven sustainability projects and collaborations with over 70 startups, Vedanta Aluminium is deploying innovations ranging from AI-based safety systems to climate-resilient infrastructure. Its Restora (low-carbon aluminium) and Restora Ultra (ultra-low carbon) product lines already record GHG intensities below 4 tCO₂e per tonne, nearly half the global benchmark.
By 2030, the company aims for 30 percent of its portfolio to comprise these green aluminium products, reinforcing its commitment to Make in India and Net Zero 2070 goals.
