Uttarakhand is set to implement a green cess on vehicles entering the state from other regions. The state government issued a notification on Friday detailing the imposition of the cess, which will be collected at toll plazas through Fast Tags.

According to the notification, the green cess will range from INR 20 to INR 80, with exceptions made for electric vehicles (EVs), compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, ambulances, and government and army vehicles.

Arvind Singh Hyanki, Secretary of Transport, explained, "Earlier, we had check posts operational at entry points to collect tax from vehicles coming from outside. We had to stop traffic at many places, leading to inconvenience, due to which we abolished this tax two years ago."

The transition to collecting the green cess through Fast Tags at toll plazas aims to streamline the process, eliminating the need for manual check posts. According to Hyanki, the green cess will be collected by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at toll plazas using Fast Tags.

While the rates of green cess charged during vehicle registration in the state remain unchanged, vehicles from other states will be subject to the newly introduced tax. The implementation of this rule is expected before the commencement of the Char-Dham Yatra in the state, pending finalization in discussions with the Center.

Revenue generated from the green cess will be earmarked for environmental initiatives, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and controlling pollution.
