Uttar Pradesh, Japan Sign MoU to Strengthen Green Hydrogen Co-operation

Uttar Pradesh and Japan have expanded their co-operation in the green hydrogen sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing clean energy technologies, investment and knowledge exchange.

The agreement brings together the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) and Japanese stakeholders to explore opportunities in green hydrogen production, technology development, capacity building and research.

The MoU was exchanged in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Energy Minister AK Sharma and Yamanashi Governor Kotaro Nagasaki. The discussions highlighted the potential for greater collaboration between the state and Japan in developing green hydrogen technologies and establishing a stronger clean energy ecosystem.

The partnership is expected to support technology sharing, technical training, research activities and industry collaboration. It could also provide opportunities for Japanese companies to participate in renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in Uttar Pradesh.

The latest development builds on the co-operation between Uttar Pradesh and Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture. The two sides had earlier entered into an agreement in December 2024 covering collaboration in green hydrogen technology.

As part of the earlier cooperation, green hydrogen Centres of Excellence were established at IIT Kanpur and IIT BHU, with a focus on research, technology development and workforce training.

Uttar Pradesh is also pursuing large scale green hydrogen development under its Green Hydrogen Policy 2024. The state has set a target to produce one million tonnes of green hydrogen and green ammonia annually by 2028.

The expanded co-operation with Japan is expected to support the state’s efforts to develop infrastructure, technology capabilities and investment opportunities across the green hydrogen value chain.
