Following the Manipur model, the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has announced that it has decided to install prepaid power meters in state-owned buildings and institutions in a phased manner from October, 2019.

The UPCL has procured over 7000 prepaid meters to launch the striving project which aims to cut down the losses of the discom.

BCK Mishra, Managing Director of UPCL, said, “The work of installing new prepaid meters would start after getting clearances from different departments. Each department will also be given a 2% subsidy in the monthly power bill.”

Elucidating the unique feature of the prepaid meters, Mishra said, “The meters will disconnect power supply after the user exceeds its maximum power consumption limit. Much like a prepaid SIM card, the user would get the details of the unit consumed on his mobile phone through alert messages,” said Mishra.
