The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to exempt road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles sold and registered in the state from 14 October 2022 to 13 October 2025. The government has further announced that from 14 October 2025 to 13 October 2027, 100 percent rebate will be given on EVs manufactured, sold and registered in the state.

The rule would be applicable to all automobiles that use electric motors powered by batteries, ultracapacitors, or fuel cells including two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers comprising strong hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), battery electric vehicle (BEV), and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). The government order has been issued to the RTOs of all the districts.

Around 11340 EVs are registered with the divisional transport office of Agra as of now. Out of these, 3997 vehicles, including 437 e-rickshaws, 30 cars, and 3530 two-wheelers have been purchased since 14 October 2022.

The exemption announced by the Yogi-led government is in addition to the subsidy provided by the central government on the purchase of EVs. These reliefs are expected to reduce the cost of two-wheelers by INR 15,000 to INR 20,000 on-road. The cost of cars would be reduced by up to INR 1 lakh.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022, a 15 percent subsidy would also be given on the factory price of electric vehicles purchased in Uttar Pradesh. A subsidy of up to INR 20 lakh per e-bus would be given on the first 400 buses bought in the state.

The announcement by the government would promote electrical vehicles in the state and end the difference in registration in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
