UP Rises to Second Position with 6.74 Lakh Residential Rooftop Solar Installations Under PM Surya Ghar

Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the second-largest state, after Gujarat, for residential rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, surpassing Maharashtra with over 6.74 lakh installations and 2.28 GW of installed capacity.

Uttar Pradesh has overtaken Maharashtra to secure the second position in the country in residential rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. So far, 6,74,393 residential rooftop solar systems have been installed across the state.
 
Gujarat ranks first with 7,49,839 installations, while Uttar Pradesh has moved to second place with 6,74,393 installations. Maharashtra ranks third with 6,73,717 installations.
 
This achievement of Uttar Pradesh is the result of the effective implementation of the scheme, high-level monitoring, inter-departmental coordination, and mission-mode efforts under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The state government has consistently made efforts at various levels, from connecting consumers with the scheme to facilitating solar plant installation, bank loans, DISCOM inspections, and expediting the subsidy process.
 
UPNEDA Director Ravinder Singh stated that as a result of the rapid expansion of residential rooftop solar installations in Uttar Pradesh, approximately 2,283.8 MW (2.28 GW) of solar power generation capacity has been installed so far.
 
He noted that rooftop solar has not only reduced consumers' dependence on conventional grid electricity but has also led to a significant reduction in their monthly electricity bills. Lakhs of families across the state are benefiting from free solar power, worth approximately INR 6.5 crore every day.
 
He further noted that this transformation is taking Uttar Pradesh beyond being merely a consumer of electricity towards a new economic direction, where consumers themselves are generating electricity from their rooftops to meet their energy needs while also becoming capable of supplying surplus electricity to the grid.
 
The large-scale expansion of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana has played a significant role in developing a strong solar economy ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh. More than 7,000 companies and business establishments associated with the solar sector are now active in the state, creating direct and indirect employment opportunities for more than 85,000 people, informed the state government.
 
It further added that a comprehensive employment value chain has emerged, spanning solar panel installation, surveying, design, engineering, electrical work, net metering, logistics, sales, marketing, and operations and maintenance. This has created new employment and self-employment opportunities, particularly for youth, technical professionals, electricians, engineers, local entrepreneurs, and small businesses.
 
The rapidly growing demand for rooftop solar in Uttar Pradesh has also provided fresh momentum to the state's solar manufacturing and supply chain ecosystem. New manufacturing units and assembly lines have been established for solar modules and related equipment. At the same time, businesses associated with inverters, mounting structures, cables, electrical components, metering equipment, warehousing, transportation, and logistics have also witnessed fresh demand, said the state government.
 
It further added that the expansion of rooftop solar has resulted in an estimated reduction in the need for more than 9,000 acres of additional land. This is helping preserve the state's valuable land for agriculture, housing, industrial development, and other developmental activities.
 
The approximately 2.28 GW of residential rooftop solar capacity installed in the state is making a significant contribution to environmental protection and to combating climate change through clean, green energy generation. Based on the estimated solar power generation and the emission factors of the Indian power grid, this installed capacity is capable of generating approximately 3.8 billion units (3.8 billion kWh) of clean electricity annually.
 
By replacing conventional fossil fuel-based power generation, it can help prevent the emission of an estimated more than 27 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
