UP Government Plans 50 MW Solar Plant in Bakhira Bird Sanctuary

To assess the viability of the solar plant's establishment in the Bakhira area, UPNEDA has tasked the LSPDCL with conducting a feasibility study.

The Uttar Pradesh government is gearing up to establish a 50 MW solar plant within the Bakhira bird sanctuary, an acclaimed Ramsar site recognized as India's largest natural floodplain wetland in Sant Kabir Nagar district.

This move follows a proposal by the district magistrate of Sant Kabir Nagar to the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), advocating for the installation of either a ground-mounted or floating solar plant in the Bakhira Lake area. The lake, situated in an eco-sensitive zone, is undergoing development to become an enticing tourist destination.

Director of UPNEDA, Anupam Shukla, mentioned that they are exploring the possibility of setting up a 50 MW solar plant in the Bakhira lake area in Sant Kabir Nagar district under the Uttar Pradesh government’s solar policy.

To assess the viability of the solar plant's establishment in the Bakhira area, UPNEDA has tasked the Lucknow Solar Power Development Corporation Ltd. (LSPDCL) with conducting a feasibility study. The study will determine the most suitable type of plant—either floating on water or ground-mounted—based on the geographical topography of the site.

Formed in 2015, LSPDCL, a joint venture of UPNEDA and the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), will play a pivotal role in shaping the solar project's execution.

The objective of this project is to generate green energy for lighting and other purposes within the sanctuary, aligning with the development of Bakhira as an eco-tourism and agro-tourism hotspot.
