UAE-based renewable energy firm AMEA Power has commissioned the 500 MW Abydos Solar PV Plant in Aswan Governorate, Egypt.
The country’s largest solar power project and one of Africa’s biggest solar facilities was completed within 18 months. It will generate 1,500 GWh of clean energy annually, supplying power to approximately 300,000 households and offsetting 782,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The solar panels for the plant were supplied by China’s JA Solar.
Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, emphasised that the project aligns with Egypt’s target of achieving 42 percent renewable energy in its power generation mix by 2030.
The Abydos plant was financed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
AMEA Power has also signed agreements for further renewable energy developments in Egypt, including a 500MW wind project and a 300MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) as an extension of the Abydos Solar PV Plant.
In September 2024, AMEA Power secured two major projects: a 1,000MW solar PV plant with a 600MWh BESS and the 300MWh BESS extension for Abydos.
Additionally, AMEA Power’s 500MW Amunet Wind Farm in Ras Ghareb is currently under construction and is expected to become operational in Q1 2025.
