UAE Renewable Energy Capacity Surges 63-Fold to 8.2 GW in a Decade

The UAE’s renewable energy capacity has increased more than 63-fold over the past decade, rising from 129 MW in 2015 to more than 8.2 GW in 2025, according to Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs.

Al Olama said that clean energy accounted for 32.4 percent of the UAE’s electricity production in 2025, with the country targeting a 35 percent share by 2031.

Clean energy sources, including nuclear, solar, wind and waste to energy, generated 62.4 GWh of electricity in 2025, while total installed clean power capacity reached 13,805 MW. Overall electricity generation stood at 192,735 GWh, compared with consumption of 174,524 GWh.

The UAE also ranked third globally for electricity access, quality and reliability, and second for energy transition and per capita solar consumption.

Among the key developments in 2025, the UAE Cabinet ratified agreements linked to the Arab Common Electricity Market, while the country signed an agreement with India on electrical interconnection. The National Electricity Grid Control Center was also completed, alongside a Siemens backed study focused on renewable energy management.

The ministry has additionally advanced projects involving electric vehicle battery recycling and green industrial transformation. It also received a Best Project award in e science at the World Summit on the Information Society for its unified energy data platform.

Al Olama said that the ministry would continue working with partners to strengthen energy security and efficiency while supporting the UAE’s clean energy transition and climate neutrality objectives.
