Turkey and Saudi Arabia are set to expand their renewable energy partnership with an additional 3,000 MW agreement, taking the total planned capacity under their cooperation framework to 5,000 MW.

Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said that the new agreement is expected to be signed on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Conference in Antalya. The additional capacity will build on an existing 2,000 MW framework between the two countries.

Bayraktar highlighted Turkey’s broader energy transformation, noting that the country’s installed electricity generation capacity has increased nearly fourfold over the past 25 years, from around 32,000 MW to 126,000 MW. He said that strengthening domestic energy resources and renewable generation remains central to Turkey's objective of improving energy independence.

The minister also pointed to rising domestic oil and natural gas production. Gas output from the Black Sea is expected to double this year and quadruple by 2028, potentially supplying around 17 million households. Oil production from the Gabar field has surpassed 83,000 barrels per day, while exploration in Diyarbakir could reveal substantially larger unconventional oil reserves.

Bayraktar also said  that disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz could accelerate efforts to develop alternative regional energy corridors through Turkey. Potential routes could include Iraqi oil flows through Ceyhan and Qatari gas transportation via Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria.

The developments underline the growing energy relationship between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, with renewable energy cooperation emerging as a key area of bilateral engagement alongside wider efforts to strengthen regional energy security and diversify supply routes.
