Tunisia is set to develop a 130 MW solar power plant in Gabes Governorate in partnership with France-headquartered Voltalia, with construction expected to begin in early 2026.
The project, valued at around 350 million Tunisian dinars (USD 113 million), will cover 200 hectares in the El-Mhimehla area of Menzel Habib, according to local media outlet Mosaiquefm. The plant is scheduled to be completed in 18 months, with operations slated to start by June 2027.
Governorate officials recently presented a study on the plant’s environmental, social, and economic impact, and a public consultation in Menzel Habib is planned to gather local feedback.
This project follows Voltalia’s earlier success in Tunisia. In December 2024, the Euronext-listed renewable energy developer won a 139 MW solar project in Gabès under a 25-year power purchase agreement, with construction expected to start in late 2025 and commissioning in 2027.
With these developments, Gabes is emerging as a key hub for Tunisia’s renewable energy ambitions, as the country ramps up its solar capacity to support sustainable growth.
