Tripura Surpasses 15 MW Rooftop Solar Capacity Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

Tripura has crossed a major milestone in residential solar adoption, with the cumulative installed rooftop solar capacity under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana reaching 15.3 MW. The achievement marks significant progress in the state's efforts to promote decentralised renewable energy and reduce dependence on conventional electricity sources. 

According to official data as of July 27, 2026, the state has received 17,330 applications under the scheme. Of these, 7,846 applications have been submitted, representing a proposed rooftop solar capacity of 24,733 kWp. Rooftop solar systems have already been installed at 4,460 households, creating a cumulative installed capacity of 15,300 kWp (15.3 MW). 

The scheme enables households to generate electricity for their own consumption while exporting surplus power to the grid through net metering. This allows consumers to lower electricity bills and earn additional income by selling excess electricity, supporting the transition towards cleaner and more decentralised power generation. 

Financial assistance under the programme has also expanded steadily. A total of 3,853 consumers have received central subsidies exceeding INR 32.52 crore, reducing the upfront cost of rooftop solar installations and encouraging wider adoption across the state.

During the April to June 2026 quarter, 1,679 consumers reduced their electricity bills to zero after installing rooftop solar systems. These consumers are also eligible to receive a combined INR 5.79 lakh for surplus electricity exported to the grid, with the amount expected to be credited to their accounts shortly. 

The programme is being implemented by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) under the guidance of the state government. With thousands of applications still in the pipeline, Tripura is expected to further expand its rooftop solar capacity, strengthening its clean energy transition while enabling more households to become producers of renewable electricity.
