In a step towards making Tripura a greener state, the state government has set an ambitious target of generating 150 MW of solar power by March 2027.

This was revealed by Energy Minister Ratan Lal Nath while addressing a press conference. Nath said the state is actively promoting the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a central government initiative that provides free electricity through rooftop solar installations for eligible households. He emphasised that the scheme has been well-received by the public in Tripura and continues to gain popularity across both urban and rural areas.

“The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme has received a good response, and the number of registrations is steadily increasing. So far, 13,536 households have registered their interest in installing rooftop solar systems under the scheme,” Nath said.

Out of the registered households, 266 families have already been connected to solar power and are availing the free electricity benefits.

To scale the initiative further, the Tripura government has chalked out a plan to bring at least 50,000 households under the scheme in the coming years. The state’s renewable energy roadmap aligns with the national push to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable power sources.

“Tripura has set a target of generating 150 MW of solar power by March 2027,” Nath reiterated. The minister also highlighted the role of community awareness and local partnerships in expanding the scheme’s reach and ensuring the timely implementation and maintenance of rooftop solar systems.

With the state’s energy mix undergoing a transition, Tripura is expected to become a key player in India’s northeastern renewable energy landscape.
