Trinasolar has emerged as the global leader in perovskite solar cell innovation, securing the top position in the latest Global Perovskite Solar Cell Invention Patent Ranking released by IPRdaily, a reputed media agency specialising in intellectual property analytics.

The Chinese solar giant filed 481 perovskite-related patent applications, the highest worldwide, underscoring its growing dominance in next-generation photovoltaic (PV) technologies. In addition to topping the perovskite ranking, Trinasolar also ranked second globally in both the solar cell and module patent category and the TOPCon solar cell innovation segment.

The rankings were compiled by IPRdaily using patent data filed and published globally over the past decade, up to March 31, 2025. The analysis applied specific keyword and classification filters related to general solar technology, perovskite solar cell innovations, and TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) solar cells. Duplicate patent filings under a single application number were consolidated.

“We are very honoured to receive this recognition from IPRdaily,” said Gao Jifan, Chairman and CEO of Trinasolar. “Technological innovation has always been Trinasolar’s core driver. We are committed to advancing the coordinated development of R&D, IP, and industry standards to fast-track commercialization of perovskite-silicon tandem technologies and contribute meaningfully to the global energy transition," he noted.

Perovskite solar cells, considered a breakthrough in the PV sector, offer significant advantages over traditional silicon-based modules. Their higher power conversion efficiency and lower manufacturing cost, owing to low-temperature solution processing, make them ideal for broader applications, from rooftops to utility-scale installations.

Trinasolar began its focused investment in perovskite R&D in 2014 and has since grown a robust IP portfolio. As highlighted by IPRdaily, Trinasolar operates a State Key Laboratory of PV Science and Technology in partnership with Fudan University and has co-founded the Innovation Center for Next-Generation PV Technologies and Equipment Manufacturing alongside more than 10 industry collaborators.

This year alone, the company has set multiple world records in perovskite-silicon tandem cell efficiency and module power output. Further bolstering its leadership, Trinasolar has acquired an exclusive license from Oxford PV, granting it rights in mainland China for R&D, manufacturing, and commercialization of advanced perovskite, perovskite/perovskite, and perovskite/silicon tandem technologies, including sublicensing rights for domestic firms.

Trinasolar’s momentum extends beyond perovskite. The firm also ranked second globally in the TOPCon solar cell patent ranking, with a particularly aggressive filing strategy, 82.78 percent of its TOPCon patents were filed in the past three years, according to IPRdaily, signaling one of the fastest growth rates in the sector.

TOPCon technology, already prevalent in commercial PV products, is emerging as a strong candidate for tandem configurations due to its high baseline efficiency and compatibility with perovskite as the top cell. The synergy between the two is poised to redefine performance benchmarks in solar energy.

As the solar industry accelerates toward more efficient, scalable, and affordable solutions, Trinasolar’s strategic IP dominance and continuous breakthroughs in tandem cell technology position it as a central force in the transition to cleaner energy.
