Trina Storage, the energy storage business unit of Trinasolar, has been selected to supply a 196 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for a 50 MW project in Japan's Oita Prefecture.

The AEJ Nozu BESS project, located in Usuki City, was awarded under Japan's fiscal 2023 Long-Term Decarbonisation Auction and is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2028.

Trina Storage will supply its Elementa 2 Pro battery storage solution, with a capacity of 5 MWh per unit, for the project.

The project adds to the company's presence in Japan's utility-scale energy storage market as the country expands grid-scale battery deployment to support its evolving energy requirements.

Trina Storage said its local team provides support across system configuration, technical consultation, delivery coordination and after-sales service, working with customers and project partners to address local requirements.

"We are pleased to support Japan’s growing renewable energy portfolio through the AEJ Nozu Battery Energy Storage System project. With Trinasolar’s longstanding experience in solar and Trina Storage’s growing presence in utility-scale energy storage, we see significant opportunities to support Japan’s evolving energy needs. For Nozu and other projects in Japan, our focus is on combining advanced technology with strong local capabilities," said Dr. Leo Zhao, head of energy storage for Asia-Pacific at Trina Storage.

The company is also supplying a 160 MWh utility-scale battery storage project in Japan's Kyushu region.

In September, Trina Storage signed a memorandum of understanding with AMP-lify for approximately 1 GWh of grid-connected battery energy storage projects in Japan, featuring its Elementa 3 series.

The agreements and projects form part of Trina Storage's expansion in Japan as demand for utility-scale energy storage grows.
