ThunderPlus Launches 0.5 MW EV Charging Station at Kovvur on NH-16

ThunderPlus has commissioned a 0.5 MW public electric vehicle charging station at Kovvur on National Highway 16, adding charging capacity along the Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam corridor.

The charging station is located within the premises of The Godavari Hub, a highway restaurant and stopover, and is positioned near the entry and exit points of the Greenfield Highway. The facility is intended to provide charging access to passenger electric cars, commercial vehicles and intercity electric buses.

The station currently has 0.5 MW of charging capacity and is supported by arrangements for 24/7 power availability. The company said that round-the-clock charging access is particularly relevant for intercity electric buses, which need to charge according to their operating schedules.

ThunderPlus plans to increase the charging station's capacity to 1 MW in the near term. The expansion is expected to add further charging capacity along the highway corridor as electric vehicle traffic on intercity routes grows.

The Kovvur facility is part of ThunderPlus' expansion of highway-based EV charging infrastructure in Southern India. The company is developing charging hubs at locations along major intercity routes to serve vehicles travelling between cities and beyond urban areas.

Highway charging infrastructure has become an important component of longer-distance electric mobility, particularly as passenger EVs, commercial vehicles and electric buses increasingly operate on intercity routes. Locating charging facilities at established highway stopovers also allows travellers to combine vehicle charging with scheduled breaks during their journeys.

Commenting on the launch, Raj Kumar Medimi, Director, ThunderPlus, said that the Kovvur station would strengthen charging connectivity between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. He added that the company plans to expand its charging network across major highway corridors in Southern India, covering electric cars, commercial vehicles and intercity electric buses.

The company said that the Kovvur station forms part of its broader effort to develop EV charging infrastructure at strategic locations along India's major highways.
