Electric car maker Tesla Inc has finally moved a step closer to its launch in India by registering its Indian subsidiary with the Registrar of Companies on January 8, 2021.

The Indian subsidiary was registered as Tesla Motors India and Energy Private Limited, having its registered office in the southern city of Bengaluru, a hub for several global tech companies.

The car marker has set-up research and development (R&D) unit in Bengaluru.

As per the filings, Tesla’s Indian arm has three directors namely Vaibhav Taneja, Venkatrangam Sreeram and David Jon Feinstein.

Vaibhav Taneja is the Chief Accounting Officer at Tesla, while David Jon Feinstein is the Senior Director, Global Trade and New Markets at Tesla, and Venkatrangam Sreeram is a Bengaluru-based entrepreneur.

As per the reports, the electric car manufacturer is in talks with five state governments like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh to set up operations in India.

In December, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways also stated that Tesla is coming to India in early 2021 and will first start off with sales, and then look at assembly and manufacturing based on the response it receives.

The move comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is promoting Make in India products and more use of clean energy to trim the country’s dependence on oil and reduce pollution.
