Telangana has invited tenders to procure 5,800 MW of renewable power to meet rising electricity demand and strengthen long-term energy security. The procurement programme includes 3,000 MW of solar power integrated with a 6,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), 800 MW of wind power and 2,000 MW of renewable energy round-the-clock (RE-RTC) power.
The tenders have been issued by the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd. (TGREDCO) and Telangana Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (TGGENCO).
The initiative comes as the state’s peak electricity demand has approached 19,900 MW, driven by industrialisation, urbanisation, data centres, electric mobility, irrigation requirements and infrastructure development.
Under the programme, the 3,000 MW solar-plus-storage capacity will be contracted for 25 years. The battery storage system is intended to store surplus solar electricity generated during the day and supply it during evening and night-time demand peaks.
Telangana will also procure 800 MW of wind power and 2,000 MW of RE-RTC power, with both categories carrying 25-year procurement periods. The RE-RTC arrangement is intended to provide a more consistent renewable electricity supply by combining renewable generation and storage resources.
Separately, TGGENCO will undertake tariff-based competitive bidding for a 2,000 MWh firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) battery storage system. The storage project will have a 15-year procurement period and is intended to help meet peak-hour electricity requirements.
The procurement programme aims to improve renewable power availability, strengthen grid reliability and reduce dependence on conventional generation and expensive short-term electricity purchases. Bid deadlines, tariffs, project locations and commissioning schedules were not specified in the available reports.
