China’s TBEA, a firm specialising in electrical equipment, has clinched a major contract from Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) to build a new 380/132kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation in the Namria region, along with expansions at two nearby substations.

The project includes Saudi Arabia’s first SF6-free GIS facility, marking a milestone in the kingdom’s push for greener, more sustainable grid infrastructure. The Namria Wind 380/132kV Bulk Supply Point (BSP) will be key to linking clean energy generated in northern Saudi Arabia to the national grid.

TBEA’s scope covers the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the new station. Once complete, the facility will function as a central hub for collecting and transmitting wind-generated power, significantly strengthening grid reliability and capacity in the region.

Authorities said the development will help eliminate transmission bottlenecks and ensure renewable energy flows efficiently into the kingdom’s main power network.
