Tata Power, India’s largest integrated power company, has always undertaken various initiatives for the benefit & improvement of the youth of the region. In line with this commitment, Tata Power Community Development Trust (TPCDT), in partnership with Abhi Foundation and CORO Foundation organized an all-girls sport event at Tata Power colony in Trombay.

The objective of this initiative, in which over 100 women participated, was to encourage gender parity. All participants were in the age group of 8 to 16 and had come in from neighboring communities of Mumbai East. Besides the different sport activities and competitions, the highlight of the event was when the girls marched over miles in a rally that was themed around breaking societal barriers of gender and space.

Expressing his joy over the initiative, Mr. Ashok Sethi, COO & ED, Tata Power, said, “Our country is developing at fast pace; however, that development is not enough if the society and our women are left behind. At Tata Power, we are always at work to unfold newer ways to empower women and I am deeply appreciative of this initiative by TPCDT. I earnestly hope that we are able to contribute to the cause of gender equality.

Tata Power’s efforts towards women empowerment include efforts in educating women which have not only helped in the uplifting of the community but has also helped mitigate child marriage. India’s high rates of child marriage is one of the core reasons behind maternal deaths. To combat this, Tata Power has also initiated various skill development and employment opportunities for women to ensure the community women have access to livelihood options in addition to education opportunities.
