March 20, 2014. By Moulin

Tata Power, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL) is committed towards inclusive growth and development of all the communities in and around its areas of operation. In line with this commitment, Tata Power has recently announced the successful installation of special Solar Powered street lights in the nearby villages of Nanikhakar, Modhva, Tragadi and Gundiyali in Mandvi Taluka under Project ‘Surya Prakash’.

Villagers near the plant used to face a problem of mobility at night as they don’t have street lights in the village area. Common area lighting was one of the needs identified during the Company’s meetings with the community, Sarpanches and village opinion leaders. After consultation, 40 solar street lights in partnership with Tata Power Community Development Trust (TPCDT) were installed in the villages. The solar street lights are designed by Tata Power Solar Systems and are cost-effective as they require lesser maintenance compared to conventional street lights.

Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Anil Sardana, Managing Director- Tata Power said, “It is Tata Power’s endeavour to improve the quality of life of its communities. This initiative enables us to light up lives through the use of renewable energy sources such as solar power. These measures are a part of the Company’s sustainability agenda and are a step forward towards achieving a greener environment. We believe in making solar energy accessible and affordable to everyone, especially to those who do not have access to electricity.”

Speaking of this activity, Mr K.K Sharma, ED & CEO, CGPL said, “With these installations, we plan to light up the common areas in the peripheral villages with natural, sustainable and alternate sources of energy.”

On the basis of the success of this initiative, CGPL and TPCDT have planned to install additional Street lights in order to benefit more villages in the vicinity. Panchayat leaders appreciated the efforts of CGPL and TPCDT and were happy to see their villages beautifully lit up. Tata Power continues to serve its target neighbouring communities and plans to invest towards an increase in the community’s access to better living standards. Future efforts by the Company will help in resolving health, sanitation and education needs of the local people. The Company is also working in partnership with NGOs, State and Central bodies which have helped them to widen the reach and leverage each partner's individual experience and expertise, thereby making substantial difference in the lives of communities.
