Tata Power Highlights its Potential Future Growth Areas for International Play

Strengthens its international foothold

Tata Power has announced that it is successfully executing several overseas projects. Showcasing its robustness and its strong abilities, Tata Power has prioritised four key regions for international play - Africa, South East Asia, the Middle East, SAARC (India Region). The Company aspires to identify growth areas in International geographies to further expand its presence and strengthen its portfolio globally.

Commenting on its international presence, Mr. Anil Sardana, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Power said, “We have created four regions — India & SAARC; Southeast Asia; Middle East cum Turkey; and Africa. We have deployed resources in each of these four regions to constantly update ourselves with the market dynamics and scout for opportunities. Our allocation strategy is simply to invest in the regions & in specific projects where we have all the clearances and are able to mitigate risks to achieve the threshold returns. In addition, Tata Power continues to evaluate various opportunities for providing management and technical advisory services in distribution business including possible partnerships in shortlisted geographies of interest.”

Tata Power’s overseas association at present is as detailed below:

International Projects:

Africa Region:

  • South Africa: The Company has a JV with South African major Exxaro and the JV vehicle M/s Cennergi Limited is pursuing a total of 235 MW of wind farms namely 134.4 MW Amakhala Emoyeni Wind Farm & 95.3 MW Tsitsikamma Community Wind Farm. At both wind farms the Wind Turbine Generator Erection is nearing completion & are awaiting Grid connectivity by Eskom, the integrated Power company at South Africa.
  • Zambia: Itezhi Tezhi Hydro Power Project: The Company has 50% share in Itezhi Tezhi Power Corporation Limited, which is implementing the 120 MW Itezhi Tezhi Hydro Project in Zambia. The balance 50% is held by Zambia Electricity Supply Company Limited, the national power utility of Zambia. The project is nearing completion and shall be commissioned before end of FY16.
  • Nigeria: The Company is engaged as Technical & Managerial advisors in Distribution venture managing Benin and Eko distribution companies..

Middle East & Turkey Region:

  • Adjaristsqali Hydro Project, Georgia: The construction of 187 MW Shuakhevi Hydro Project in Georgia is progressing as per schedule. International Finance Corporation, Asian Development Bank and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are the lenders to the project. This is a JV project with Clean Energy of Norway and IFC as partners. The project activities are progressing as per schedule and the COD for the 187 MW Shuakhevi PH is likely to be in end of FY17.
  • Koromkheti Hydro Project, Georgia: The detailed FR and DPR for 110 MW project is under preparation. Investment decision would follow after completion of studies in the next 12 months time.
  • Comprehensive Electricity Management consulting assignment at Ras-Al-Khaimah was completed in 2014 and company continues to engage with the Emirate to explore further opportunities of association.

South East Asia Region:

  • Indonesia: Company continues its association with four Mining companies namely KPC, Arutmin, AGM and BSSR. These blocks are productive and primarily export thermal coal to various clients across the globe.
  • 3x18 MW Thermal project is under development in Indonesia at KPC Sangatha area.
  • 240 MW Geothermal project is under exploration through the JV company OTP, which is a 50:50 JV between Tata Power and Origin of Australia
  • Vietnam: Company is developing 1320 MW Long Phu 2 imported coal based thermal power project in Soc Thang district in Vietnam, based on Supercritical Technology, for which feasibility studies have been completed and PPA is being negotiated.

India Neighboring Region

  • Bhutan: Dagachhu Hydro Power Project (DHPC) (2x63 MW): Project was commissioned in March 2015. The Company owns 26% share in the project with the balance being held by Govt of Bhutan entity, with rights to sell 100% power in India. This is the first project in Bhutan of this kind.
  • Myanmar: Tata Power has signed with Govt of Myanmar to develop 600 MW imported coal based project in South-west Myanmar. FR has been submitted and further discussions are under way.
