Tata Power EV Charging Solutions (TPEVCSL), a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Varanasi Smart City (VSCL) to strengthen electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the northern Indian city, the company said.

The agreement was signed in the presence of the Municipal Commissioner and VSCL Chief Executive Officer Himanshu Nagpal on the occasion of World Environment Day, as the two organisations seek to support Varanasi's transition to cleaner, more sustainable urban mobility.

Under the partnership, Tata Power EV Charging Solutions and Varanasi Smart City will identify and deploy EV charging infrastructure at strategic locations across the city, including public parking areas, transit hubs, municipal assets, commercial centres and tourist destinations.

The charging network will focus on high-traffic and transit-oriented locations to provide convenient and reliable charging access for EV users. The companies said the infrastructure would be designed to scale in line with the city's evolving mobility requirements.

The initiative supports the Uttar Pradesh government's push for green mobility and aligns with the objectives of India's Smart Cities Mission, while contributing to Varanasi Smart City's plans to develop future-ready urban infrastructure.

To mark World Environment Day, the two organisations also conducted a plantation drive under the theme "Planting Today for a Greener Tomorrow." Saplings were planted as part of the initiative, highlighting their commitment to environmental sustainability and greener urban development.

TPEVCSL said it already has an operational presence in Varanasi, with EV charging installations at locations including Taj Ganges, Hotel Surya and Brijlax Motors TML.

India has been accelerating efforts to promote electric mobility through policy support and infrastructure development, with charging availability seen as a key factor in boosting EV adoption across the country.
