Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (Tata Power-DDL) has achieved a milestone in the deployment of rooftop solar installations across its licensed area in North Delhi. The company has facilitated 5,530 rooftop solar connections across key consumer segments. The Domestic segment accounts for the highest number of rooftop solar connections with 3,995, followed by Commercial and Industrial (C&I) 1,497, and others 38.
C&I leads energised capacity with 60.969 MWp, followed by domestic (34.929 MWp), and others (12.565 MWp).
The initiative, aligned with the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the Delhi Solar Policy, is enabling consumers to reduce electricity bills while contributing to Delhi’s clean energy vision.
An increasing number of residential societies are also turning to clean energy. To date, 13 societies under Tata Power-DDL’s area of operations have installed rooftop solar systems, with a total sanctioned capacity of 0.377 MWp. Most of these have opted for system sizes ranging between 2 kW and 3 kW.
“Every kilowatt of rooftop solar capacity generates approximately 100–120 units of electricity per month, enabling consumers to recover their investment within 3 to 4 years through savings on electricity bills,” said a Tata Power-DDL spokesperson. This widespread adoption has led to a cumulative sanctioned load of approximately 100+ MWp.
The rapid uptake of rooftop solar has been significantly driven by attractive incentives offered by both the Central Government and the Delhi Government. Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, residential consumers are eligible to receive a subsidy of INR 30,000 per kilowatt for rooftop solar systems up to 2 kW. For systems between 2–3 kW, the same subsidy applies, with the total subsidy amount capped at INR 78,000 for installations above 3 kW. In addition to financial support, the scheme also offers up to 300 units of free electricity per month generated from the rooftop system.
At the state level, the Delhi Solar Policy complements these benefits by providing a capital subsidy of up to INR 30,000 per household. It also includes Generation-Based Incentives (GBI), offering INR 3 kWh for residential systems up to 3 kW, INR 2 per kWh for residential and institutional systems between 3–10 kW, and INR 1 kWh for C&I users.
