A consortium led by TAQA has been awarded the 2.6 GW Taweelah C Independent Power Producer (IPP) project in Abu Dhabi, marking a major addition to the Emirate’s power generation capacity.

The consortium includes Saudi Arabia-based Aljomaih Energy and Water Company and Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries. The project award follows the signing of a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with EWEC, Abu Dhabi’s sole procurer and supplier of water and electricity. The agreement will remain in force until 2050.

Taweelah C will be developed as a highly efficient gas-fired power plant using H-class turbines supplied by Siemens Energy. The facility has also been designed to enable the potential integration of carbon capture technologies in the future, supporting efforts to reduce emissions from conventional power generation.

Under the ownership structure, TAQA will hold a 60 percent stake in the project company, while Aljomaih Energy and Water Company and Sembcorp Industries will collectively own the remaining 40 percent. For the operations and maintenance (O&M) company, the international consortium will hold a 60 percent stake, with TAQA owning the remaining 40 percent.

The Taweelah C IPP is expected to commence commercial operations in 2029, strengthening Abu Dhabi’s electricity supply as demand continues to grow alongside industrial and economic development.

The project marks Aljomaih Energy and Water Company’s first utility-sector investment in the UAE, while it represents Sembcorp’s second project in the country after its participation in the Fujairah 1 Independent Water and Power Plant.
