Eight government polytechnic colleges in Tamil Nadu have launched a new three-year Diploma in Renewable Energy programme, starting from the 2025-26 academic year.

This initiative is part of a collaboration between the Government of Tamil Nadu and Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL), aimed at creating a skilled workforce for India’s rapidly expanding clean energy sector.

The programme adopts an ‘Earn While You Learn’ model, offering students monthly stipends ranging from INR 4,000 to INR 10,000.
Each year, students will spend three months in the classroom and nine months in practical training with industry experts, providing direct industry exposure.

The course structure includes three months of classroom training annually at the participating colleges—located in Madurai, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Usilampatti, Andipatti, and Chekkanurani—where students will receive INR 4,000 per month.
For the remaining nine months of each year, students will receive hands-on industrial training at Tata Power Solar Ltd. in Tirunelveli, a wholly owned subsidiary of TPREL.

During the industrial exposure, they will receive a stipend of INR 8,000 in the first year, increasing to INR 9,000 in the second year and INR 10,000 in the final year.

Additionally, eligible students may receive INR 1,000 per month through the Pudhumaipen or Tamil Pudhalvan schemes. Hostel and food facilities will be provided free of charge during industrial training, and the course fee is set at an affordable INR 2,500 per year.
The programme is open to students who have completed Class XII, and a total of 240 students will be enrolled.

The launch of this diploma follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in April 2025 between TP Solar Ltd, Guidance Tamil Nadu, and the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE).

TPREL is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy projects across solar, wind, hybrid, floating solar, and battery storage systems. It also offers green energy solutions for both rural and urban markets, including turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, operations and maintenance (O and M), rooftop solar installations, and solar pumps.

The company also operates a high-tech solar cell and module manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, with capacities of 530 MW for cells and 682 MW for modules. Additionally, TP Solar has completed the construction of a 4 GW module manufacturing facility and has started commercial production from a 2 GW solar cell line.

In addition to its manufacturing capabilities, TPREL provides electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and advisory services across the renewable energy sector.

As of April 2025, the company’s total renewable utility capacity stands at 10.9 GW, with 5.4 GW operational—comprising 4.4 GW solar and 1 GW wind.
