Suzuki Motor Corporation has placed India at the heart of its global technology strategy, announcing plans to launch flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) this fiscal year and expand its biogas initiative in partnership with dairy cooperatives.
The updates were shared during the company’s Technology Strategy Briefing 2025 held in Japan, recently. FFVs are internal combustion engine vehicles capable of running on multiple fuels, usually blends of gasoline with ethanol or methanol. Suzuki said all its motorcycle and automobile models are now compatible with E20 fuel. Mass production of FFV motorcycles has already begun, while FFV models for automobiles are expected to be introduced in India within this fiscal year.
The company confirmed that E20 bioethanol-compatible engines were rolled out in April and that development is underway to launch FFVs capable of running on up to 85 per cent ethanol. Alongside, Suzuki is building compressed biogas (CBG) plants in India and modifying its CNG vehicles to run on carbon-neutral fuels.
A key element of Suzuki’s decarbonisation plan is its biogas business. The company aims to convert manure from India’s 300 million cattle into biogas, which can serve as a carbon-neutral fuel and provide organic fertilizer. The biogas will be used directly in CNG vehicles, which already account for one out of every three vehicles sold by Maruti Suzuki.
Besides, Suzuki is also working with India’s dairy cooperatives to construct biogas production plants, scheduled to start operations in phases from 2025. The company noted that purchasing cow dung would not only enhance rural incomes but also help India meet its goals of energy self-sufficiency and fertilizer security. Suzuki said it will continue to expand its biogas business in line with India’s growth and the global drive toward a carbon-neutral society.
