Suzuki Motor, a Japanese automaker, is poised to commence electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing in India, targeting exports to Japan as early as 2025, according to the Nikkei newspaper.
In a strategic move to establish India as its global electric car manufacturing hub, Suzuki is also exploring the possibility of supplying India-manufactured EVs to partner Toyota Motor for the European market under the Toyota brand.
Suzuki has refrained from commenting on the report, and Toyota, holding a 4.9 percent stake in Suzuki, has yet to provide an official response.
The Nikkei revealed that Suzuki intends to set up a new production line at a plant in India's western state of Gujarat, where its subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki, will begin EV production next autumn.
The exported battery-powered cars to Japan will mainly be small sports utility vehicles, priced between 3 million yen ( USD 20,043) and 4 million yen. Additionally, the production line will manufacture gasoline-powered cars and is expected to reach an annual capacity of 250,000 units.
This move underscores Suzuki's commitment to align with the global shift towards electric mobility while capitalizing on India's burgeoning automotive industry.
