Suzuki Motor Corporation and Suzuki R&D Center India (SRDI), a subsidiary of Suzuki in India, recently inaugurated a 1.5 tons per day biogas plant at in Bhukhala in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat.
Spread across 27,000 sq. m. of area, the Banas Suzuki Biogas Plant has a capacity to process 100 tons/day of cow dung to produce the amount of fuel required for approximately 850 CNG vehicles per day, the company stated.
This is Suzuki’s second biogas plant, following the Agthala plant, which opened in December 2025. It will produce and sell biogas as fuel for CNG vehicles (CBG), as well as sell organic fertiliser from cow dung after biogas generation.
The opening ceremony of the plant, held earlier this month, was attended by Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, Shankar Chaudhary, Chairman of Banas Dairy and Speaker of Gujarat Legislative Assembly, and Kenichiro Toyofuku, Managing Officer, Executive General Manager, Biogas Operations of Suzuki.
Biogas, a carbon-neutral fuel, can be used in CNG vehicles, which account for about 20 percent of the passenger car market in India, and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the operation of biogas plants will lead to improved energy self-sufficiency, the creation of new jobs, and enhanced rural income and living standards through the purchase of cattle dung, the company stated.
In September 2023, Suzuki signed an agreement with the National Dairy Development Board and Banas Dairy through SRDI, and agreed to the construction of five biogas plants, including the two active plants – Agthala and Bhukhala.
