Sterlite Electric has appointed Jean Maxime Saugrain as its chief technology officer, bringing in an executive with four decades of experience in power cables, overhead lines, superconducting systems and optical fibre manufacturing.

Saugrain will lead the company's technology strategy, product development and engineering capabilities as it expands its portfolio of solutions for power transmission and distribution networks, Sterlite Electric said.

He previously held senior technical leadership roles at Nexans and spent about 15 years at Alcatel, working across optical fibre research and development, industrialisation and manufacturing.

During his career, Saugrain has led the development and qualification of 320 kV and 525 kV direct-current cable systems and worked on superconducting technologies for power grids.

"Jean Maxime brings deep technical expertise and extensive experience in developing and industrialising advanced technologies for the power sector. His understanding of high-voltage systems, materials and optical technologies will strengthen our technology and engineering capabilities as we develop solutions for the evolving needs of power grids," Sterlite Electric CEO Frederic Trefois said.

Saugrain said power networks were evolving rapidly, creating new requirements for performance, reliability and technology.

"I look forward to working with Sterlite Electric to strengthen the company’s technology capabilities, accelerate the development of new solutions and translate engineering innovation into technologies that address the changing needs of our customers," he said.

His experience includes technology programmes involving superconducting cables, including the AmpaCity project in Essen, Germany, and a superconducting cable project for Commonwealth Edison in Chicago. He has also led collaborative research and development programmes funded by the European Union and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Saugrain holds an engineering degree from École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles in Paris and a postgraduate degree in materials sciences from Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris.
