Statkraft has forged new power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national railway company.
Under the terms of the agreements, Statkraft will supply green electricity from hydropower and onshore wind farms to Deutsche Bahn over the coming years, furthering the railway company's efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources.
Beginning in 2027 and extending through 2034, Statkraft will directly supply green electricity from its two run-of-river power plants in Langwedel and Landesbergen, located in Lower Saxony, Germany. Throughout the 8-year contract, Statkraft will deliver more than 350,000 MWh of green electricity, providing a structured baseload profile to meet Deutsche Bahn's energy needs.
Additionally, the agreement includes the supply of wind power from a portfolio of wind farms across Lower Saxony, Hesse, and Brandenburg. These PPAs cover an estimated generation of approximately 147,000 MWh from 2024 to 2026, ensuring the economic operation of the wind turbines during this period.
Patrick Koch, Head of Origination Germany at Statkraft, expressed the company's dedication to driving the energy transition and providing tailored energy solutions to customers like Deutsche Bahn. He stated, "These agreements show our commitment to driving the energy transition and offering our customers flexible, customized energy solutions – be it with green electricity from various energy sources or contracts with individual structures and terms."
This collaboration marks another milestone in the partnership between Statkraft and Deutsche Bahn, with Statkraft already supplying 1.9 TWh of green electricity from hydropower as part of a cross-border PPA. In 2021, the company also provided one year of onshore wind power to Deutsche Bahn from wind turbines that had exhausted subsidies.
The green power PPAs align with Deutsche Bahn's ambitious sustainability goals, aiming to achieve climate neutrality by 2040 and reduce CO2 emissions by 50 percent by 2030. Despite market fluctuations, Statkraft's long-term price stability offers assurance to Deutsche Bahn as it pursues its environmental objectives.
