SSE Renewables, the renewable energy IPP arm of UK utility SSE, has announced its final investment decision to commence the construction of a 320MW/640MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Monk Fryston project in Yorkshire, northern England.
This project, located adjacent to a substation operated by the UK's National Grid, is set to become the largest under-construction BESS in the country.
Richard Cave-Bigley, Solar and Battery Director for SSE Renewables, expressed enthusiasm for the development.
While larger BESS projects with planning permission exist, this marks the first major construction milestone for a BESS of this scale in the UK.
SSE Renewables has been actively pursuing battery storage projects, with this being their third to reach the construction phase, reflecting the growing importance of energy storage in the UK's evolving energy landscape.
