Sri Lanka has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to solicit bids for the development of two floating solar plants with a total capacity of 200 MW. These projects will be located on the Samanalawewa Reservoir, situated 160 km south of the capital, Colombo. This marks the first solar auction in Sri Lanka.
The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), a government-owned utility, has issued the tender and is inviting proposals for the construction of two 100 MW floating solar plants on the reservoir's surface. The deadline for submitting proposals is December 13, 2023.
Experienced and qualified firms are eligible to submit one proposal for a 100 MW capacity. The proposals must include comprehensive details about the power plants, grid interconnection, transmission lines, and substations.
Sri Lanka had an installed solar capacity of 714 MW by the end of 2022. This initiative represents a significant step toward expanding the country's solar energy capacity and harnessing the potential of floating solar technology. Sri Lanka introduced its first floating solar project with a capacity of 42 kW in 2022.
