The Southern Railway announced its plan to upgrade existing electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities and install new ones at several railway stations in the city. This would help the commuters who commute by private EVs to reach the station and park there for the day. This is the second attempt, as earlier the idea flopped despite being free.
Southern Railway’s Chennai division has proposed to commission charging facilities in 28 railway stations under this initiative. The work is already underway at Light House, Thirumayilai, Velachery, and Kotturpuram. Installation of the EV charging units is expected by June this year.
Out of the 28 railway stations, eight are in the Chennai Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpattu section and seven are in the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), operated between Velachery and Chennai Beach. Moore Market Complex (MMC), Chengalpattu, Tirusulam, Taramani, Beach, Avadi, and Guindy are among some of the key stations that will have an EV charging facility.
Apart from this, the Southern Railway has also taken the initiative to provide a battery swapping facility. Commuters using EVs can charge their vehicles or rent a spare battery to use in the interim. Commuters can retrieve their batteries when they return to the station. Contracts have been awarded to private players for the installation of battery-swapping counters at 11 railway stations.
Both battery charging and swapping would be available at Thiruvanmiyur, Egmore, Velachery, and MMC railway stations.
